anorexia nervosa
an eating disorder characterized by starving behavior, being underweight, and amenorrhea
binge
to eat an excessively large amount of food within discrete period of time, usually considered to be about two hours
Binge Eating Disorder
an eating disorder characterized by binging, without any purging or restriction
bulimia nervosa
an eating disorder characterized by binging and purging or other compensatory behaviors such as fasting or excessive exercise
purge
an inappropriate attempt to compensate for overeating through the use of vomiting, laxative abuse, or diuretics
lunage
fine, downy hair development over the body in anorexia
arrhythmia
loss of heart rhythm; cardiac arrhythmia can result in heart failure
respiration
the process of producing energy from fuels using oxygen and producing carbon dioxide and water
Vo2 Max
The maximum amount of oxygen that can be supplied at any instant in an individual
aerobic
the condition of producing energy through processes that require oxygen; having sufficient oxygen to do so
anaerobic
the condition of producing energy through processes that do not require oxygen, not having sufficient oxygen to produce energy through other processes
anaerobic threshold
the level of exercise intensity at which anaerobic energy production becomes necessary and lactic acid begins to accumulate in the muscle
immediate energy system
a system that releases energy stored in creatine phosphate for rapid maximal muscle contraction of every short duration
anaerobic glycolysis
the process that splits glucose into pyruvate and releases energy to ATP and NADH
aerobic metabolism
processes begins with the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA,proceeds to the citric acid cycle, & ends with the electron transprt chain; aerobic metabolism produces NADH,H*, FADH2, ATP,C O2, and water, and requires oxygen as final electron acceptor
hyponatremia
dilution of electrolyte by overhydration- low sodium in blood
hypokalemia
low potassium in blood
Water soluble vitamins
Vitamin C thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, vitamin b-12, b-6, biotin, and pantothenic acid
Zinc
100 enzymes present in body
involved in gene expression
necessary for cell division
Zinc Deficiency
poor growth, wound healing, maturation, immune response, poor skin and reproductive defects
Zinc Excess
lowers immune response
Iron
myoglobin
myelinsheaths
neurotransmitters
Iron deficiency
learning disabilities
hundreds of enzymes known as metalloenzymes depend on iron
structure/cofactor
detoxification of enzymes
energy release
Vitamin b-12- Colbalamin
-found in enrich bread flour
myelinsheath
activates folate
DNA synthesis
Vit b-12 Colbalamin deficiency
low intake of vit b or folate
neurological problems
neural tube defects (spina bifida)
fortification
the addition of a nutrient to a food
Potassium
major positive intarcellular ion
nerve
exchange of Na+ K
used to trigger muscle contraction
Loss of K
weakness
cardiac arrhythmia
FOUND IN: eating disorders, sweating
Sodium
exchange of Na+ and K to trigger muscle contraction
loss of NA
decrease in exercise capacity
cramping
Calcium
nerve impulses
muscle contraction
Low CA
inhibit muscle contraction
Chromium
enhances ability of insulin to bind to receptor
promotes glucose uptake
Pyridoxine (B6)
synthesis of non-essential Amino Acids
synthesis of neurotransmitters
Deficiency and Toxicity
neurological symptoms
Vitamin C
collagen
scurry (failure of collagen
neurotransmitters
high immune response
Vitamin E
fat soluble found in seeds such as grains
protects lipid components
Vitamin E deficiency
nernoysis-breaskdown of red blood cells
low immune response
Vitamin A (retinol)
precursor for beta-carotine ( better)
500 carotoneids
lycopene and lutein - protect lipid portion of cells
Vit A Deficiency
night blindness, blindness, problems with differentiation or maturation
Vitamin D
ultraviolet light
-strengthens bones
Vitamin K
found in green veggies
healthy blood function synthesis of prothrombin ( blood clotting )
DEFICIENCY- BLOOD won't clot
Folate (folic acid)
DNA synthesis
cell division
Folate deficiency
macrocytic or megablastic anemia
B-12 (coblamin)
activate folate - pernicious anemia
