What is a subsystem?
formed by generation, sex, interest, or function.
- marital
- parental
- sibling
What does the marital subsystem govern?
how the husband and wife interact. involves sex.
What does the parental subsystem govern?
about parents. about parenting, discipline, nurturing.
What does the sibling subsystem govern?
offering other siblings support, providing opportunities to practice social skills.
What is a hierarchy?
well-organized systems have clear distinctions between levels of the system. Clear lines of authority. no democracy.
What is a coalition?
one member of the family siding with a second member against a third.
What is an alliance?
Two family members share an interest with one another that is not shared by the third. does not interfere with the functioning of the family.
What is a cross-generational coalition?
ex:when a parent persuades a child to side with him or her against the other parent, or when a wife or husband sides with their own parent against their spouse.
What is parentification?
An imbalance in the family's power and authority hierarchy that develops when power and control rest with the children, or when parents rely on their children for nurturance, support, and care.
What are unclear/too rigid boundaries called and what do they result in?
disengagement. Hierarchies are likely to become confused, and problems in the family's functioning are likely to occur
What are diffuse boundaries called and what do they result in?
enmeshment. overinvolvement between family members.
