Lactulose (Cephulac)
given in cirrhosis, promotes ammonia excretion, MoA of increasing stool water, acidity, nitrates
Isoniazid (INH)
monitor liver function for toxicity at least monthly - AST (SGOT)& ALT (SGPT) labs (& enzymes)
Spironolactone (Aldactone) Not with AMILoride (Midamore) 5mg PO daily
both K+ sparing diuretics
K+ sparing diuretics have
slow onset of action
Best time to take Thiazide diuretics is
in the morning d/t diuresis
ProcalAmine(3% amino Acids, 3% glycerin with electrolytes) is good alternative to TPN because it
can be given in peripheral IV

beta-adrenergic blocker , causing bronchospasms so don?t give to COPD or asthma patients! Instead give beta-1 selective blocker such as Atenolol (Tenormin)
Metoclopramide (Reglan) is contraindicated for a client who
has intestinal obstruction because it promotes gastric emptying
Aminophylline (Aminophyllin) continuous IV drip tmt for:
asthma, toxicity S & Sx nausea, HA, pounding heart. Turn off infusion
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) is used to prevent B6 deficiency:
secondary to INH therapy. S & Sx are peripheral neuropathies (numbness/tingling in the extremities, especially hands & feet)
Allopurinol (Zyloprim) toxicity manifests as:
potentially fatal fever or rash
Osmotic Laxatives work by
pulling water into the colon & feces
Adenosine must be given
rapid bolus over 1 ? 2 seconds IV push close to the heart, then flushed with 20mL saline to get all med into heart
Nitropress is potent vasodilator with IMMEDIATE onset of action given IV
must be given via infusion pump to assure accurate dosage rate.
Rifampin will affect all body fluids, such as tears, sweat, saliva, & urine by:
turning them an orange-red color which may be permanent on clothing & soft contact lenses
Gemfibrozil (Lopid) needs lab monitoring of:
cholesterol levels & liver fx studies
