- Life of their own
- More than the sum of their parts
- Emergent Properties Organisational Culture - Organisations seem to have a personality
- helpful, efficient, forgiving, flexible, rigid,
inovative, conservative etc.
- A popular definition of culture "how things are done around here"
- Formally "a system of share meaning held by members that
distinguishes the organisation from other organisations"
- But be aware that sub cultures can exist
- e.g. marketing department takes risk
accounting conforms to rules What do cultures do? - Provide boundaries between one organisation and the next
- Convey a sense of identity to the members
- Generate commitment beyond self interest
- Enhance social stability
- Provide a sense making and control mechanism to guide employees

- Socialise the employees they keep
