Syllable structure process
changes in the CV makeup
Most common syllable structure processes
1. weak syllable deletion
2. cluster reduction
3. Final consonant deletion
4. glottal replacement
Syllable Deletion/weak syllable deletion
deletion of syllable
- normal, especially during first 50 words
should be suppressed by around age 4
Final consonant deletion
final singleton (not preceded/followed by a consonant) consonant is omitted
should be suppressed by around age 3
Initial consonant deletion
initial singleton consonant is omitted
- atypical
Cluster reduction
cluster is 2+ abutting consonants
- one or more consonants comprising a consonant cluster is omitted
- cluster omission - all consonants omitted
will exist until about school age
Coalescence
replacement of two consonants with a different consonant that contains phonetic features of the two target consonants of a cluster
Epenthesis
addition of sound to word
/blu/ -- /bəlu/
suppressed around age 8:0
Diminutization
adding /i/ or /I/ to end of word "baby talk"
Doubling
repeating a monosyllabic word resulting in a multisyllabic word
Glottal Replacement
substituting a glottal stop for a consonant
-atypical --> cleft
Metathesis
transposing/reversing consonants in a word
- atypical --> apraxia
migration
movement of phoneme from one position to another
- atypical --> apraxia
Assimilation/Harmony deviations
articulatory properties of one sound influence the production of another
- frequent in very young children
- if beyond age 3:0 = sign for disordered phonological system
Progressive assimilation
sound in word is influenced by a preceding sound
----------->
regressive assimilation
sound is influenced by a later sound so that an earlier sound is changed
<------------------
normal
Labial assimilation
nonlabial changes to a labial
/bop/ for /boat/
other types of assimilation
Labial
velar
alveolar
nasal
Prevocalic voicing
voicing an unvoiced consonant when it precedes a vowel
Post vocalic devoicing
changing a voiced obstruent at the end of a word to a voiceless obstruent
prevocalic devoicing/ postvocalic voicing
atypical
reduplication
/wawa/ for water
same number of syllables
common process during first 50 words stage
Substitution Process
replacing one sound by another sound without being influenced by the surrounding phonemes
Stopping
substitution of a stop for a fricative/affricate
age of suppression varies by sound
Fronting
substitution of a more anteriorly produced phoneme
should stop around age 5 (other studies say 3:6)
Backing
substitution of a more posteriorly produced phoneme
Affrication
non-affricate becomes an affricate
affricates are /tʃ/ and /dʒ/
Deaffrication
fricative for an affricate
fricatives are:
/ʃ/, /ʒ/, /f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /h/
Palatalization
sound produced as palatal
palatals are:
/ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ, /dʒ/, /j/, /r/
Depalatazation
nonpalatal for a palatal
gliding
use of glide for another consonant
Glides are:
/w/, /j/
goes beyond age 5 up to age 7
Vocalization/Vowelization
vowel for liquid phoneme
Denasalization
nasal replaced by non-nasal homorganic
