Plagiarism Exercises Select your answers to each paragraph. If you claim that revision is needed, then briefly explain why. Source material: "The need for bilingual voting grew out of the experiences of many minority-language citizens who were treated poorly at voting sites and were often flatly denied their lawful right to vote. Their experiences mirrored those of many African Americans who were discouraged from voting by literacy test requirements, poll taxes, and other tactics of intimidation. Policies of this type were aimed at preventing vulnerable segments of society from gaining the power of the vote and thereby undermining the control that the more advantaged classes had over them. With the current attack on bilingual elections, these tactics continue." (Susan J. Dicken, Languages in America: A Pluralist View. Clevedon, UK: Multilingual Matters, 1996; the quotation is from p. 173) Student material: Many minority-language citizens were treated badly at voting sites and flatly denied their lawful right to vote (Dicken 173) __1__ (documented correctly/revision needed). This is similar to the treatment that many African Americans experienced when they tried to vote __2__ (documented correctly/revision needed). According to Dicken, such policies were designed to prevent "vulnerable segments of society" from "undermining the control that the more advantaged classes had over them" (173) __3__ (documented correctly/revision needed). #1 ? Documented Correctly or Revision Needed? #2 ? Documented Correctly or Revision Needed? #3 ? Documented Correctly or Revision Needed? Source material: "Employer attitudes toward nepotism vary widely from firm to firm. A Minneapolis manufacturing company employs many members of the same family because it has found that a good employee with a strong work ethic has other family members who share that attitude. A tooling and manufacturing firm located near a large Midwestern city takes the opposite approach in its antinepotism policy and will not hire an individual if his or her spouse works for the firm. If two employees marry, the less senior individual must quit his or her job. Another company has a "no-spouse" rule that prohibits an employee from supervising or working in the same department as his or her spouse. . . . Should an individual be forced to quit his or her job just because he or she marries another employee of the same company? Is it fair to deny employment to an individual because another family member works for the same firm? Or is it fair that a manager places his spouse in a key job even though there are other employees who may be better qualified?" (William S. Hubbartt, The New Battle over Workplace Privacy. New York: American Management Association, 1998; the quotation is from p. 83) Student material: Companies vary widely in their nepotism policies. At one extreme, some firms actively seek to employ members of the same family; at the other extreme, some firms forbid it __1__ (documented correctly/revision needed). According to Hubbartt, some companies require one individual to quit or move to another department if two employees become married __2__ (documented correctly/revision needed). These policies raise a number of questions, such as whether it is fair to force a person to quit a job after marrying a co-worker or to allow a manager to promote his or her spouse __3__ (documented correctly/revision needed). #1 ? Documented Correctly or Revision Needed? #2 ? Documented Correctly or Revision Needed? The student summarized untrue information, it should be ?the less individual must quit or move to another department if two employees become married?. #3 ? Documented Correctly or Revision Needed? Section II EXAMPLE OF MATERIAL FROM INTERNET SOURCE Source: ?Tattoos and the World?s 100 Sexiest Women? by Vince Hemingson HYPERLINK "http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/top100_women_tattoos.htm" http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/top100_women_tattoos.htm (2003) This is the original source: How many of the world?s top 100 sexiest women have tattoos? FMH Magazine published their annual list of the 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2002 as voted on by their readers. The poll offers a fascinating insight into the popularity of tattoos among female celebrities. A quick look at the Top 100 list reveals that one of the things that many of the women picked have in common is body art, i.e. tattoos! This is the student?s paper: Many of the world?s top 100 sexiest women have tattoos. Two years ago FMH Magazine published their annual list of the 100 Sexiest Women in the World as voted on by their readers. The poll offers a fascinating insight into the popularity of tattoos among female celebrities. A quick look at the Top 100 list reveals that one of the things that many of the women picked have in common is body art, i.e. tattoos! Did this student plagiarize? If so, rewrite the student text so that it is not plagiarized. Yes. According to Vince Hemingson in his article ?Tattoos and the World?s 100 Sexiest Women?, he explains ?many of the world?s top 100 sexiest women have tattoos. Two years ago FMH Magazine published their annual list of the 100 Sexiest Women in the World as voted on by their readers. The poll offers a fascinating insight into the popularity of tattoos among female celebrities. A quick look at the Top 100 list reveals that one of the things that many of the women picked have in common is body art, i.e. tattoos!? EXAMPLE OF MATERIAL FROM A BOOK Source: Addonizio, Kim, and Cheryl Dumesnil. Introduction. Dorothy Parker?s Elbow: Tattoos on Writers, Writers on Tattoos. New York: Warner Books, 2002. xiii-xvi. From the source: Clearly, tattooing has emerged from the underbelly to the surface of the American landscape. And as the popularity of tattoos has expanded, so has the art itself. No longer restricted to Bettie Page look-alikes,? muddy blue anchors, and ribbon-wrapped hearts reading Mom, today?s tattoo images make bold statements of personality, as individualized and varied as any art form. (xiii) From the student?s paper: It?s a fact that tattoos have arise from the underbelly to the top of the American landscape. Tattooing has experienced a growing popularity, and so has the art itself. It is no longer limited to sailor-style ships and blue anchors, or biker-type hearts reading ?Mom.? Today?s images include bold statements of individualized personality as diverse as any art form (Addonizio and Dumesnil xii). Did this student avoid plagiarism in her attempt to summarize material from her source? Why or why not? If it is plagiarized, rewrite the student text so that it is not plagiarized. No because the student used some of their own words to summarize the material but gave credit to the authors at the end of their summary. EXAMPLE OF MATERIAL FROM A JOURNAL Source: Clinical Nursing 10 (2001): 424-41. From the source: Participants queried represented a wide age range?between 19 and 55. Results showed that participants perceived few health risks involving piercing and tattooing and desired additional piercings and/or tattoos. Individual expression was an important body alteration motivation for both piercing and tattooing. These findings underscore the importance of health care professionals' maintaining nonjudgmental attitudes about those who alter their bodies, there by facilitating important health education concerning related health risks. From the student?s paper: According to the journal Clinical Nursing, individuals who wanted to have tattoos or piercings do not consider the health risks involved. This makes it clear that for health care professionals, an open-minded attitude towards patients with tattoos or piercings facilitates the optimal environment for important health education concerning related health risks. Did the student plagiarize in her attempt to paraphrase the source material? Why or why not? If it is plagiarized, rewrite the student text so that it is not plagiarized. No, the student paraphrased her own paper by using her own word style and used different sentence structure. Don?t forget to email your answers to me!
