Diction

denotation
the dictionary meaning of a word; more technical
Connotation
suggestions or underlying implications a word may possess; stimulating an emotion (mother/vacation/home)
imagery
descriptive words in a poem that appeal to your senses
Metaphor
making a connection between normally unrelated things/ ideas. without using like or as
Simile
establishes the comparison of two unrelated things by using like or as
Personification
type of metaphorical comparison in which abstract concepts or inanimate objects are given to human qualities
Symbolism
when a person, object, or idea stands for itself and something higher such as a dove standing for peace.
Alliteration
the repetition of initial consonant sounds, and it helps to form the pattern of poetry.
"The day of his death was a dark, cold day.
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds when consonant sounds are unlike, creating partial rhyme such as late/mate.
Onomatopoeia
when the word imitates the sound itself.

a line that ends with some sort of punctuation
