David created a unified state of Israel that ended under Solomon The effect of David choosing Jerusalem as his city is effecting today-Jerusalem is a holy city. David has a sensitivity to God but is a frail person Psalm 26 : David asks for God's vindication because of his personal integrity. "protective psalm" 1-3: David says he has integrity and is innocent of charges of wrong doing brought against him; David turns to God when accused and asks God for vindication; does not say that he is without sin, but invites God to scrutinize his life and reveals his passion to do God's will. "shfa" judge me/declare me righteous (vindication) Blameless: same word to characterize job in job 1 "bakhan": to probe/try/examine: he invites God (huge deal for a Jew) to examine his life and find him blameless. David is aware of his need of purification-in his heart and his mind; my thoughts and my innermost feelings. "hesed" God's loyal love! truth God has motivated him and enabled him to walk with integrity in heart. 4-8: David cites his separation from sinners; speaking not of social preference but of spiritual conviction. hypocrites: those who's ways are hidden from others. David will not associate with the wicked or engage in their ways- he will not "dwell" with them. He identifies himself with "innocence"; says the he prefers your sanctuary than the dwelling places of the wicked 9-12: "pedaah" to ransom or deliver from trouble; references the exodus! godliness: way of life before God. righteousness: way of life before others. Psalm 32 and 51 deal with David's sin.
