Sensory Memory
Immediate initial recording of information.
Short term memory
Holds a few items breifly ie. Phone number then forget it
Long term memory
The relatively permanent and limitless storage of memory
Maintenance Rehersal
To turn short term into long term you must reherse it.
Efortful encoding
you must try and remember and store information
Automatic encoding
automaticly stored and retrieved (9/11)
Flashbulb memories
automatic memories due to unexpected emotional event
Ebbinghaus
used nonsence syllables to test memory over a period of time
Spacing effect
distributed practice yeaild better long term retention
Mnemonics
Memory aids like flash cards
chunking
orginizing items into familiar managable units.like an acronym
Hierarchies
Broad topic broken into subtopics
Iconic memory
A photographic memory of a few seconds. (a man not wearing pants)
Echoic memory
Auditory memory that lasts a few seconds (Tune a guitar)
Selective attention
the ability to focus on one sitmulus
Explicit memory
Facts that one can consiously know and declare; facts or events (Hippocampus helps)
IMplicit memory
without conscious recall; motor skills (Celrebellum helps)
Retrograde Amnesia
Loss of memory of the past
Anterograde amnesia
inablity to form new memories "senile dementia"
Infantile amnesia
Inabliity to remember much before age 3
