anxiety disorders
psychological disorders characterized by distressing persistent anxiety or maladaptive behaviors that reduce anxiety
panic disorder
An anxiety disorder characterized by sudden, overwhelming attacks of terror. Sudden episode of intense dread.
generalized anxiety disorder
an anxiety disorder in which a person is continually tense, apprehensive, and in a state of autonomic nervous system arousal
Phobias
Irrational fears of specific objects or situations
agoraphobia
fear of being in a place or situation from which escape is difficult or embarrassing, or in which help is unavailable in the event of a panic attack.
social phobia
marked fear of public appearances in which embarrassment or humiliation is possible
obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and/or actions (compulsions).
post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
-recurring and intermittent episodes of anxiety following a traumatic stress event
Major depressive disorder (MDD)
A mood disorder characterized by at least 2 weeks of depressed mood or loss of interest in nearly all activities, along with sleep or eating disturbances, loss of energy, and feelings or hopelessness
mood disorders
psychological disorder characterized by emotional extremes.
Dysthymia
A disorder that involves the same symptoms of depression only less severe, but the symptoms last longer, persisting for at least 2 years.
bipolar disorder
a mood disorder in which the person alternates between the hopelessness and lethargy of depression and the overexcited state of mania
-one: experience at least one manic episode
-Two: hypo manic so the highs aren't as impairing and don't require hospitalization
Schizophrenia
a group of sever disorders characterized disorganized and delusional thinking, disturbed perceptions, and inappropriate emotions and actions
Paranoid Schizophrenia
-Preoccupation with one of more delusions or hallucinations
Catatonic schizophrenia
Marked by striking motor disturbances, ranging from muscular rigidity to random motor activity.
Symptoms of Schizophernia
-life stressor brings it out
-adolescence and early adulthood
-inappropriate reactions and delusions
-prenatal problems (flu epidemics)
-nutritional deprivation/oxygen deprivation at birth
delusions
false beliefs, often of persecution or grandeur, that may accompany psychotic disorders
residual schizophrenia
withdrawal, after hallucinations and delusions have disappeared

Personality Disorders
Characterized by inflexible and enduring behavior patterns that impair social functioning.
Antisocial personality Disorder
A personality disorder in which the person (usually a man) exhibits a lack of conscience for wrongdoing, even toward friends and family members. May be aggressive and ruthless or a clever con artist
Avoidant Personality Disorder
anxiety, sensitivity to rejection, withdrawn
Schizoid Personality Disorder
eccentric behaviors, emotionless disengagement, loner
Histrionic Personality Disorder
Excessive emotionality and attention seeking
schizotypal personality disorder
a personality disorder characterized by extreme discomfort in close relationships, odd forms of thinking and perceiving, and behavioral eccentricities
Biological Perspective on Mood Disorders
-decreased levels of norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine
social cognitive perspective- mood disorders
self-defeating beliefs- the concept that depressed people view life through dark lenses
-may arise from learned helplessness
negative thoughts feed negative moods
negative moods feed negative thoughts
somatoform disorders
psychological disorder in which the symptoms take a somatic (bodily) form without apparent physical cause
-conversion disorder: psychological loss of specific voluntary body functions

factitious disorder
a condition in which an individual acts as if he or she has a physical or mental illness when he or she is not really sick
Dissociative disorders
disorders in which conscious awareness becomes separated (dissociated) from previous memories, thoughts, and feelings.
-amnesia: inability to recall
fugue: travels away from home and doesn't remember
dissociative identity disorder
a dissociative disorder in which a person develops two or more distinct personalities. Also known as multiple personality disorder

axis III- medical conditions
axis IV- psychosocial stressors
axis V- global assessment of functioning score
