Reactant
substance that exists before a chemical reaction starts.
Recessive
Mendel's name for a specific trait hidden or masked in the F1 generation.
Red Blood Cell
Hemoglobin-containing, disc-shaped, short-lived blood cell that lacks a nucleus and that transports oxygen to all the body's cells.
Red Bone Marrow
type of marrow that produces red and what blood cells and platelets.
Regeneration
ability to replace or regrow body parts missing due to predation or damage.
Reproduction
Production of offspring.
Reservoir
source of a pathogen in the environment.
Response
organism's reaction to a stimulus.
Retina
innermost layer of the eye that contains rods and cones.
Ribosome
Simple cell organelle that helps maufacture proteins.
Rubisco
enzyme that converts inorganic carbon dioxide molecules into organic molecules during the final step of the Calvin cycle.
Scale
small, flat, platelike structure near the surface of the skin of most fishes
Scientific Method
a series of problem-sloving procedures that might include observations, forming a hypothesis, experimenting, gathering and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions.
Sclerenchyma
plant cell that lacks cytoplasm and other living components when mature, leaving thick, rigid cell walls that provide support and function in transport of materials.
Sebaceous Gland
oil-producing gland in the dermis that lubricates skin and hair.
Seed
adaptive reproductive structure of some vascular plants that contains an embryo, nutrients for the embryo, and is covered by a protective coat.
Seed Coat
protective tissue that forms from the hardening of the outside layers of the ovule.
Selective Breeding
directed breeding to produce plants and animals with desired traits.
Selective Permeability
property of the plasma membrane that allows it to control movement of substances into or out of the cell.
Semen
fluid that contains sperm, nourishment, and other fluids of the male reproductive system.
Semicircular Canal
inner-ear structure that transmits information about body position and balance to the brain.
Semiconservative Replication
method of DNA replication in which parental strands seperate, act as templates, and produce molecules of DNA with one parental DNA strand and one new DNA strand.
Seminferous Tubule
tubule of the testis in which sperm develop.
Sepal
flower organ that protects the bud.
Sex Chromosome
X or Y chromosome
Sex Linked Trait
characteristic, such as red-green color blindness, controlled by genes on the X chromosome; also called an X-linked trait.
Sexual Selection
change in the frequency of a trait based on competition of a mate.
Sister Chromatid
structure that contains identical DNA copies and is formed during DNA replication.
Skeletal Muscle
striated muscle that causes movement when contracted and is attached to bones by tendons.
Smooth Muscle
muscle that lines many hallow internal organs, such as the stomach and uterus.
Small Intestine
longest part of the digestive tract; involved in mechanical and chemical digestion.
Solute
substance disloved in solvent.
Solvent
substace in which another substance is dissolved.
Somatic Nervous System
part of the peripheral nervous system that transmits impulses to and from skin and skeletal muscles.
Spawning
process by which male and female fishes release their gametes near each other in the water.
Species
group of organisms that can be interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Species Diversity
in a biological community, the number and abundance of different species.
Spindle Apparatus
structure made of spindle fibers, centrioles, and aster fibers that is involved in moving and organizing chromosomes before the cell divides.
Spongy Bone
less dense inner-bone layer with many cavities that contain bone marrow.
Spongy Mesophyll
loosely packed, irregularly shaped cells with spaces around them located below the palisade mesophyll.
Spore
reproductive haploid cell with a hard outer shell that forms a new organism without the fusion of gametes and is produced in the asexual and sexual life cycles of most fungi and some other organisms.
Stamen
male reproductive organ of most flowers composed of filament and an anther.
Stem Cell
unspecialized cell that can develop into a specialized cell under the right conditions.
Stimulant
substance/drug that increases alertness and physical activity.
Stimulus
any change in an organism's internal or external environment that causes the organism to react.
Stroma
fluid-filled space outside the grana in which light-dependant reactions take place.
Substrate
reactant to which an enzyme binds.
Sympathetic Nervous System
branch of the autonomic nervous system that controls organs and is most active during emergencies or stress.
Synapse
gap between one neuron's axon and another neuron's dendrite.
Taste Bud
one of a number of specialized chemical receptors on the tongue that can detect sweet, sour, salty, and bitter tastes.
Telophase
last stage of mitosis in which nucleoli reappear. Two new nuclear membranes begin to form, but the cell has not yet completely divided.
Tendon
Tough connective-tissue band that connects muscle to bone.
Thyroxine
thyroid hormone that increases the metabolic rate of cells.
Trachea
Tube that carries air from the larynx to the bronchi.
Thylakoid
in chloroplasts, one of the stacked, flattened, pigment-containing membranes in which light dependant reactions occur.
