the place and space for talk--in an appropriate manner is a task everybody must manage
Adjacency Pair
a concept developed by Scheloff and Sacks to explain the orderliness of conversation
Insertion Sequences
a second way adjacency pairs may be expanded is through this. it involves an inserted adjacency pair to determine if some condition applies that would make the conversationally preferred option possible
Noticeably Absent
if an expected second paid part is not forthcoming, it will be a noticeably absent--and communicators will give social meaning to its absence

refers to the structurally preferred second act for adjacency pairs that may take one of two forms. the friendly chatting that occurs between people about topics such as the weather, sports, food, fashion, and children
Deductive Organization
to being with a general claim and follow it with the particular reasons is an effective strategy when the emphasis is on facilitating the listener's understanding
Work as means Philosophy
work is treated as the means to make money in order to live
Work as Ends
sees work as he primary place for articulating the self
