Categorical Form Documentary
uses categories or simple patterns to convey info.
Story v. Plot
the difference between all the information implied/involved in the film, and the section of it actually seen on screen,
Temporal order
sometimes things happen logically ABCD, but sometimes, for effectiveness there are flashbacks or flashforwards BCAD
Duration
Refers not to the actual time of the movie, but the distance of time over which events span.
Temporal Frequency
how many times the same event from a story is seen
Range of narration
number of narrators/perspectives, who knows what? unrestricted=audience knows everything (& more) that the characters do. Restricted=audience only know what one character knows.
Depth of Narration
How much of the characters inner thoughts are revealed through VO, POV, or dream sequences. Objective if none of this is revealed, subjective if it is.
Setting
the dressing, details, and location of a scene or shot
Frontal lighting
eliminates shadows, creating a flat-looking image
Sidelight
also called crosslight; creates sharp attached shadows on one side of the face
Backlight
creates silhouettes or edge lighting
Underlighting
distorts features of a face; like a flashlight
Top lighting
like a spotlight. can sometimes be glamourous.
Key light
the primary light source casting strongest shadows
Fill light
softens or eliminates shadows
3-point lighting
Classic hollywood style. involves a bright backlight, key and fill, working to illuminate and soften the image creating a romantic feel
High-key
part of the three-point hollywood style; low contrast
Low-key Illumination
high contrast lighting, sharp and dark

Inferred causality
if a man approaches a building, and is then shown inside the building, it is inferred that he went through the door to get there
Kuleshov effect
if a shot of a person looking off screen cuts to a shot of an object and back to the face, we will assume the first and third shots are responding to the intercut object
180 degree rule
keep shots on one side of the action & stays consistent
30 degree rule
between any two shots there must be at least a 30 degree angle difference
shot/reverse shot, eyeline matches
cut between two people talking to each other, or between two objects related by an offscreen look
matching on action
a cut in the middle of an action, such as standing up
surrealism
themes of sex, violence, dreams and subjectivity. non-rational systems of organization & narrative ambiguity

foley
sound recorded after filming

overal tunnel spectrum of sound "tint" of sound
sound perspective
location & placement of sound on/off screen
realism
ratio between the real thing and it's artistic representation. mundane and subtle narrative digression. opposition to hollywood
rear projection
technique of combining foreground action & background action filmed earlier. background is projected from behind the screen while the foreground is projected on top
formalism
subjective vision of imagination, focuses on technical aspects. not diegetic.
focal length
distance from center of the lens to the point at which light rays meet in sharp focus.
eliptical editing
editing which omits unneccisary parts of action. temporal change
deep focus
use of lighting and lens to keep both close and far range objects in focus at the same time
distance of framing
apparent distance of the frame from the mis-en-scene elements
depth of field
measurements of closest and furthest objects in frame between which everything will be in sharp focus. usually 5-16ft
direct sound
sound recorded from event at the moment of filming
axis of action
in editing the imaginary lines passing side to side through main actors defining the spatial relations between these elements
anamorphic lens
lens for making widescreen films using regular academy ratio frame size. compresses wide field of view onto smaller frame
internal diegetic sound
diegetic sound represented as coming from the mind of a character within the space
shallow focus
a restricted depth of field
telephoto lens
a lens of long length that enlarges distant planes & makes them seem close to foreground planes.
wide-angle lens
lens of short focal length that distorts straight lines near the edges of the frame & exaggerates the distance between foreground and background planes.
zoom lens
a lens with a focal length that can be changed during the shot
