The one group that serves everybody Assistance to other community groups > libraries, museums, theaters ?new? marketing thrust ??? $$$ - How is it paid for? Taxes ? sales tax ? property tax Fees & charges Grants ? very few grants for operating things ? heritage fund. Lottery money helps parks and recreation. Contributions ? not a lot of cash contribution Other things > sponsors, special district fees ? in phoenix you pay 1/10 of a cent goes into Senoran preserve. Facilities & Equipment Parks (#1 thing). Impossible to maintain. Got destroyed, replacing them took forever. They were small you had to drive to them. Took much time and not worth it. Neighborhood park, typically 5 acres. ? basketball court, playground, picnic armadas. Maybe a little smaller Community parks support every 4 square miles. Ball fields, volleyball, bigger playground. Sometimes swimming pools ? associated with schools. District park ? 120 acres. Friendship park in Avondale. Rose Moffard Park on 25th ave and Peoria. Regional parks. Arizona ? White Tanks McDowell Mountain. Thunderbird Park. Linear parks ? long skinny parks along canals or rail road tracks. Community centers (#2 thing) Open space Playgrounds Under 7 Age 7-12 No playgrounds for teens. They usually have basketball courts and skate parks and malls! Staff Professional is very college educated. Have to have a college degree. Even to do part time. Part timers Federal Government ? all have recreational leaders Outdoor > National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management (Pete), Forest Service, Fish & Wildlife Service, Corps of Engineers Assistance to others > tourism, Indian tribes, environmentalists $$$ problems ? don?t think they can charge enough Problem > lack of coordination between agencies Politics ? raising fees at the grand canyon because it costs too much to maintain it State Government Outdoor > AZ State Parks - camp grounds, lakes & rivers, caves, historical areas, hospitals, prisons, universities (all state run), therapeutic Power from Constitution > hand down to local government, gave power to cities to organize city recreation. Unless you have power you can?t run programs. Park Districts & Counties Chicago ? few cities that do big things like park district. Own taxes etc? Maricopa County ? parks and recreation O?neil Park and pool, University Park both started at county park. Municipal Government Parks, pools, playgrounds, centers, special sites (historical and outdoor), sports complexes, cultural facilities Programs > a little bit of everything, year round and seasonal Employment Patterns ? everything except administrator is civil service. Civil service Contractual- g et contract move into PT then move into full time Hiring process ? hiring dept. you have to fill out application, best are interviewed and is hired. Huge number of jobs.
