Genotype
The combination of alleles that that determine the trait that a person receives when born
Phenotype
An observable characteristic from the genotype of the specific condition or trait.
Allele
When a trait has more than one possibility for a trait, characteristic to recognize Genotypes and Phenotypes.
Dominant
An allele that when paired with a recessive allele, is noticeable
Recessive
An allele that when paired with a dominant allele is hidden
Carriers
an individual with a recessive allele for a trait that is not shown in their phenotype.
Co-dominance
When 2 dominant alleles are a result of a mixture of both sets of alleles.
Homozygous
When two alleles of a trait have same or similar traits.
Heterozygous
When two alleles are not of similar trait, one of them is dominant and the other is recessive.
Pedigree
how a specific trait travels through family generations
Di-hybrid Cross
2 organisms with different traits mate.
Enzyme
A protein that speed up chemical reactions by gathering substrates.
Sex Chromosomes
Chromosomes that determine the gender of an individual.
Sex-linked Trait
A trait with alleles that can be carried on by the sex chromosomes X & Y
X-linked
Traits that are carried on by the X chromosome.
Male Pattern Baldness
A trait sex-linked to males that can cause baldness earlier in life.
Population Genetics
The study of the allele frequency distribution and the results of migration, natural selection, genetic drift, or mutation on this frequency.
Test Cross
Used to predict the phenotype/genotype of the offspring of 2 parents.
Denature
When an enzyme is exposed to conditions that cause it to lose its shape and unable to form chemical reactions
Catalyst
creating/initializing a faster chemical reaction.
Faciliated Diffusion
diffusion that uses materials that are not hydrophobic, which need help to get across the membrane with transport proteins.
Simple Diffusion
diffusion that doesn't require energy, occurring when equilibrium is unstable The cell takes in or out water so that the concentration of sodium chloride and water in and out of the cell are equal.
Hemophilia
Disease that can prevent the clotting of blood.
Active Sites
area on the enzyme where substrates can be attached.
Autosomes
Chromosomes that are unrelated to sexes
Chitin
A polymer of nitrogen-containing polysaccharide [(C8H13O5N)n] rendering a tough, protective covering or structural support in certain organisms.
Endocytosis
A process in which cell takes in materials from the outside by engulfing and fusing them with its plasma membrane.
Exocytosis
The process in which the cell releases materials to the outside by discharging them as membrane-bounded vesicles passing through the cell membrane.
Diploid
A cell or an organism consisting of two sets of chromosomes.
Translation
The genetic code that is carried by mRNA is decoded to produce the specific sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain.
Homologous
Showing a degree of similarity
Selectively Permeable
being specific when allowing things to enter, only certain molecules and not to all molecules.
Aqueous
Of or containing water, typically as a solvent or medium.
Unicellular
Consisting of a single cell
Organelles
Any of a number of organized or specialized structures within a living cell
