Watershed
The region of land that contributes water to a stream, river, pond, lake or other body of water.
Habitat
A natural environment of an organism; place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism.
Riparian Zone
The land areas along the banks of the rivers and streams.
Producers
An organism, as a plant, that is able to produce its own food from inorganic substances
Consumers
An organism as a plant that is able to produce it's own food or inorganic substances.
pH
A measure of acidity of a solution equal to the common logarithm of the reciprocal of the concentration of hydrogen ions in moles per cubic decimetre of solution
Temperature
A measure of warmth or coldness of an object or substance with reference to some standard value.
Dissolved Oxygen
The amount of oxygen present in fresh water, such as a stream, or freshwater lake.
Turbidity
Measures the amount of suspended material in water such as sediments carried in muddy runoff after a storm.
Stream Discharge
Is the volume of water flowing past a certain point over a designated period of time.
Evaporation
the change by which any substance is converted from a liquid state into and carried off in vapor
Runoff
something that drains or flows off, as rain that flows off from the land in streams.
Stream Order
a common stream classification system that reffers to size of a stream and its tributaries.
Hydrograph
a type of graph that shows stream discharge
Neutral
The middle or equal
Condensation
the change in the phase of matter from the gaseous phase into liquid droplets or solid grains of the same element/ chemical species
Impervious
Not permitting penetration or passage of water through item/object
Food Chain
Illustrates a sequence of organisms and their food sources/
Metamorphosis
The stage of invertbrates take to become an "adult" invertebrate.
Streamflow
The volume of water flowing past a certain point over a designated period of time.
Acid
A compound capable of neutralizing alkalis.
Indicator
a plant, animal, or species that indicates, by its presence in a given area.
Fecal Coliforms
Bacteria in trash
Headwaters
when water rises
Groundwater
the water beneath the surface of the ground
Food web
Combine more than one food chain into a more complex network of feeding relationships.
Nymph
A water invertebrate
Invertebrates
A creature without a backbone
Turbulence
The degree to which water mixes with air as the water tumbles over rocks
Point Source Pollutants
can be traced to a single source such as a pipe or smokestack
Non Point Source Pollutants
Com from many sources such as runoff from highways or farm fields
Pupa
3rd step in metamorphosis. Right before adult
Phosphorus
Important nutrient, used by plants and animals to build nuceil acids.
Macroinvertebrate
water creatures without backbones
Base Flow
Slow and steady flow of groundwater into streams
Alkali
The buffering capacity of water.
True or false? Anything above a 7 is an acid
False. Anything higher than a 7 is a base.
Base
A compound that reacts with an acid to form a salt, as ammonia, calcium hydroxide, or certain nitrogen.
Percolation
the slow movement of water through the pores in soil or permeable rock
Percipitation
A form of water, such as rain, snow, or sleet, that condenses from the atmosphere, becomes too heavy to remain suspended, and falls to the Earth's surface
Larva
2nd stage in Metamorphosis pupal stage. One after egg.
Exoskeleton
an external covering or integument, esp. when hard, as the shells of crustaceans
Buffer
any substance or mixture of compounds that, added to a solution, is capable of neutralizing both acids and bases without appreciably changing the original acidity or alkalinity of the solution.
Neutralization
A reaction between an acid and a base that yields a salt and water
Transpiration
The process through which plants relase water to the atmosphere
What is a good pH result?
7 because it is the neutral number.
What number does the pH scale go up to?
14
How much of Earth's water is fresh that is from ice caps, glaciers etc?
69.6%
How much of Earth's water is fresh that comes from groundwater?
30.1%
How much of Earth's water is fresh that comes from lakes, rivers, streams, etc?
.30%
What uses more water typically? Tap water or a Dripping faucet?
Tap water
True or false? anything below 7 is a base.
False. Anything lower than a 7 is an acid.
What does running a turbidity test do?
Shows if there is any bacteria in the water.
Watershed Divine
The boundary around a watershed
On an average how much water do American's use?
300 to 400 liters per day for household uses
What does running a dissolved oxygen test do?
Shows whether the oxygen levels are high or not, so then you can figure out if the watre is suitable for humans or not.
What does running a pH test do?
Shows how much acid is in the water.
What does running a Phosphorus test do?
Shows how healthy the water is.
Euthropication
When the water is too clear and sunlight reaches to algae and it grows abundantly, blocking the sunlight to other plants and animals so there is not enough oxygen and the water is declared "dead"
What does running a Chlorine test do?
Shows if the water has germs in it. That is why schools put chlorine in the pools because it makes the pools clean.
ppm
Parts Per Million
tds
Total Dissolved Solids
tss
Total Suspended Solids
