Matter and Energy
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What are five states of matter?
Gas, Liquid, Solid, Plasma, Bose-Einstein condensates
How does matter change states?
Adding and removing energy from matter
What is energy?
The ability to cause change
What is an atom?
Single unit of an element.
Blue - protons
Red - neutrons
Gray - electrons
What is an element?
Matter composed of atoms that are chemically identical.
What is a molecule?
Single unit of a compound.
What is a compound?
Matter consisting of two or more elements chemically bonded together.
What is the difference between molecular (covalent) compounds and ionic compounds?
Molecular - two atoms bond together by sharing their outermost electrons
Ionic - one loses an electron and the other gains an electron
What is an ion?
An electrically charged atom.
What is a mixture?
A combination of two or more substances in which each substance retains its own identity.
What is a suspension, and what is a solution?
In a solution, the substances are mixed evenly and one is dissolved into the other. In a suspension, the substances are not dissolved into each other.
What do all organic compounds contain?
Carbon and Hydrogen
What are the four organic compounds?
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids
Why is water so important?
Life may have begun in water, and living things are more than 50% water. Water is a great solvent, so chemical reactions can occur in it.
