Relief of allergy symptoms, motion sickness, and insomnia. Mild nighttime sedation.
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Side effect/Adverse reaction
Drowsiness, anorexia, dry mouth
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Assessment/ Implementation/ Evaluation
When used for insomnia, administer 20 minutes before bedtime and schedule activities to minimize interruption of sleep. Elderly patients should be monitored for profound sedation and altered consciousness, which may contribute to falls or other injuries. Eval- Improved sleep when used as a sedative/hypnotic.

May cause drowsiness. Their effectiveness may diminish with long-term use.

Produces all levels of CNS depression

Reduce anxiety and cause drowsiness. At moderate doses they inhibit seizure activity and promote sleep.

Drowsiness, respiratory depression, psychological and physical dependance
Phenobarbital (Luminal) Assessment/ Implementation/ Evaluation
Elderly may react w/ marked excitement, depression, and confusion. Supervise ambulation and transfer of patients following administration. Eval- improvement in sleep patterns
Phenobarbital (Luminal) Pt teaching
Report extreme lethargy, slurred speech, disorientation, or ataxia. Avoid abrupt discontinuations of therapy as this may cause seizures.

Diazepam (Valium) Indication
Drug of choice for various anxiety disorders, insomnia, alcohol withdrawal, seizures
Diazepam (Valium) Side effect/Adverse reaction
Drowsiness, lethargy, constipation, physical dependance and psychological dependence
Diazepam (Valium) Assessment/ Implementation/ Evaluation
Assess risk of falls in elderly. Assess degree of anxiety and level of sedation. Eval- decrease in anxiety levels, improved sleep.
Diazepam (Valium) pt teaching
Abrupt withdrawal may cause insomnia, nervousness, seizures. Avoid taking OTC sleep-inducing antihistamines. Avoid consuming alcohol.

Amnesia, daytime drowsiness

Assess mental status, sleep patterns, and potential for abuse prior to administration. Eval- relief of insomnia

Because of rapid onset, advise pt to go to bed immediately. May cause daytime drowsiness.
