Appellate jurisdiction

The jurisdiction of courts brought to them on appeal of lower courts

Civil Law

The body of law involving cases without a charge of criminality. It concerns disputes between two parties and consists of both statues and comon law.

Class Action Suit

A small number of people to sue on behalf of all other people similarly situated.

Common Law

The accumilation of judicial decisions applied in civil law disputes.

Criminal Law

The body of law involving a individual who is charged with violating a spoecific law. The offense may be harmful to an individual or society and in either case warrants punishement such as imprisonment or fine.

District Courts

The ninty one courts of original jurisdiction in which no trials are held and juries may be empaneled.

dual sovereignty

The idea that both the national and state governments have sovereignty, but over different policy areas and functions.
