learner preparation
- capture the learner's attention
- create appropriate level of arousal based on learner's level of development and stage of learning as related to the learning goal
- introduce the content to be learned
- CREATE A READY-MOTIVATED LEARNER!!
verbal instruction
Amount of Information
- short yet complete
- capture and maintain focus thruout entire set of directions
- only say what is absolutely needed at that moment in time
- specific and concise
- consider use of vocabulary
- focus on key--critical items when talking
Focus attention
During initial instructions
- focus attention on critical elements of the mvmnt so the learner is not left guessing what to focus on
- consistently re-focus the learner
- internal focus- focus attention on specific body mvmt
- external focus-focus attention on effects of actions on environment
Create a Frame of Reference during Verbal Instructions
- provide learners with what they can expect or what they will experience when they perform the mvmt
- when punting, you will feel a little pressure on the shoelace area
- when using crutches you should feel weight on your hands and not your armpits
- when throwing you will see your arm moving across your body
Utilize Multiple Senses
- be aware that learners are unique in how they prefer to receive new info
- present information using as many modes as possible...see it, hear it, feel it, move it, talk about it
use knowledge of previously learned skills during verbal instructions
- what have they already learned and how does that relate to what they are currently learning?
- activating prior knowledge
- make it explicit for the learner--help them make the connection
Quality Instructional Cues
- Matches the learning goal = aligned
- short, concise
- relevant to the learner
- developmentally appropriate
- easy to remember
- usable
- evokes and image
- correct
cues are effective if...
- used consistently
- repeated many times
- verbally repeated by students--self talk
- aligned with feedback
- used in conjunction with a visual
information to include in a cue
- cues must tell students how to do something
- not merely what to do
- keep control of the ball means very little
- little taps-- light taps
Check for Understanding after Verbal Instructions
- How should this be done
- observation
- questioning
- showing, modeling
- create opportunities to respond using different modes of learning
- how is this different when working with an individual vs wking with a group
what to demonstrate
- patterns, coordination, movement processes, postures, technique
- not effective to demonstrate parameter values such as speed or force
- entire vs partial demonstration
- real time vs slow time
who should demonstrate
- value of an expert model = fosters passive engagement of observer; encourages mvmnt imitation
- value of like-skilled model = fosters active engagement of observer; encourages mvmnt exploration
- similar in physical characteristics to skill
- more meaningful take away
how to demonstrate
- direct or focus mover's attention onto critical elements-- help them perceive the correct stimuli
- make sure all learners can see the critical elements of the demonstration
- offer multiple demonstrations from different angles
- demonstrate in same spatial orientation as you expect them to perform the mvmnt
when and how often to demonstrate
- when to demonstrate
- introduction of a mvmnt skill--whole real time
- thruout practice-- partial n both real time and slow motion
- conclusion of mvmnt practice--whole, real time
- how often to demo is determined by...
- complexity of the skill
- extent of learners' understanding
