-Cutaneous - enters through cut, causes papule then eschar , 20% mortality

-Digestive- enters on hands or infected food secretng toxins 20% mortality

Clostridium tetani

neuromuscular disease, but frequently infects through skin

obligate anaerobe- deep puncture wound

releases neurotoxins, muscles in constant contraction

Clostridium perfringens

resides in soil, skin intestinges vagina; infects damage tissue

2 forms:

bacterium spreads around but remains localized

other form divides and matures in large muscles, then sends toxins to other muscles

"Hansen's Disease" - Mycobacterium leprae

affects skin and nerves,

Bacterium is very slow growing, cannot be grown in culture

social stigma; isolation

M. Leprae can be grown in footpads of armadillos

Staphylococcus acireus

-toxic shock syndrome- entering small cut in vagina

-Sepsis- blood infection

group A streptococcus

opportunistic bacteria invade skin through cut or abrasion
