Briggs (2008) ISBN 0-321-45820-6 Calculator: A standard scientific calculator is required. Please bring your calculator to each class session. Make sure you know how to use it and use the calculator manual for instructions. Bring the calculator manual to class for additional help from the instructor. Attendance: Attendance is important, as you will primarily accomplish your learning in the classroom through lectures and discussions. Unannounced (pop) quizzes will be also administered and if you miss class there will be no make up for the quizzes. If you must miss class, it is your responsibility to find out what was covered during class. See the instructor if you must miss class or have any question. Homework Problems: Suggested problems are assigned for each class period. These problems will not be collected nor will they be graded. However, unannounced (pop) quizzes that reflect the homework problems and topics discussed in class will be given. A copy of the Solutions Manual has been placed on reserve in the library. You can use these problems and solutions to assess yourself and seek further assistance from the instructor in class for concepts that are not clear. COURSE GRADE Your course grade will be calculated as follows: Quizzes: 100 Midterm Exam: 100 Final Exam: 100 Writing Assignments (Projects): 100 Average: 100 Grading Scale based on the Average above: 93-100 A 73-76 C 90-92 A- 70-72 C- 86-89 B+ 67-69 D+ 83-85 B 63-66 D 80-82 B- 60-62 D- 77-79 C+ 59 or lower F Midterm & Final and Quizzes: Both, midterm and final exams will be administered in the classroom. The midterm will cover the first half of the material and the final will be comprehensive. The questions on each exam will be short-answer problems in which relevant work must be neatly and clearly shown to receive full credit. Of course partial credit will be given for correct partial work. Missed exams can only be made up if arrangements are made with the instructor in advance and the reason is deemed valid, which does include absence due to observation of a religious holiday. Important Note: In order to pass the class, a minimally passing grade (or better) must be achieved on the final exam. Quizzes will be given frequently in class and unannounced (pop quizzes). A quiz generally reflects one or two problems of the assigned homework problems or a topic discussed in class. Only your hand written ?Cheat Sheet? which consists of formulae only may be used during the quiz and exams; textbooks, notebooks, and other materials are not to be used during the quizzes or Exams. Conversion factors will be included in any quiz or exam, so no need to write them down on your cheat sheet. Writing Assignments or Projects: There will be 3 ? 4 projects assigned throughout the semester due a week after being assigned. Each project will typically consist of a problem to solve along with a writing component in which you will interpret and explain the results. The writing requirements for the project will be outlined when the project is assigned. Late projects will lose 5 points per classroom meeting (T or R). Projects may be turned in early with no penalty. SPECIAL NOTES Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a letter from Disabilities Services (DS) and discuss specific needs with the instructor, preferably during the first two weeks of class. DS determines accommodations based on documented disabilities.
