Patterns and significant details often require two or three reads of a story before they become evident. 3 qualities are needed to discover carefully placed symbols within works: a. Careful consideration of elements of the story b. Sensitivity to language c. Common sense Symbols are widely recognized by a society or culture are called conventional symbols. Three examples of conventional symbols: a. Wedding ring b. White wedding dress c. Alligator trademark Writers use these types of symbols to reinforce meanings. Literary symbols can include traditional, conventional, or public meanings, but it may also be established internally by the total context of the work in which it appears. A literary symbol can be a setting, character, action, object, name or anything else in a work that maintains its literal significance while suggesting other meanings. Symbols cannot be restricted to a single meaning; they are suggestive rather than definitive. Because symbols have multiple meanings, they allow writers to say more with less. When a character, object, or incident indicates a single, fixed meaning, the writer is using allegory. The primary focus in allegory is on the abstract idea called forth by the concrete object. If you treat stories like people - with tact and care - you will find they ordinarily are accessible and enjoyable.
