Teen Pregnancies In the article Teen pregnancies tied to tastes for sexy TV shows it talks about how in society today teens who watch more TV shows with casual sex are more likely to become a teen parent. The article gave statistics in which it showed that out of 2,003 teens between the ages of 12 and 17, both boys and girls, 58 of the girls had become pregnant that watched the shows and 33 boys had gotten girls pregnant. Overall the article states that television today is mostly responsible for the large amount of teen pregnancies. I happen to agree with what the article says. Some of the shows mentioned in the article were Sex and the City, That 70?s Show, and Friends. All of these shows have casual sex throughout every season. By having teens watch these shows as they mature and grow up they think that having casual sex is ok and there are never any consequences. The truth in that matter is purely fiction, there are consequences, and teens are learning them the hard way. The article also talks about how there are other factors that could be responsible for the teen pregnancies as well. Such as low self esteem, bad parenting, and income. This is also very true, although television may have a more subconscious effect on the teens today, what really affects them is how they live. Therefore I do agree with the article and think it?s a very interesting outlook on this subject. Yes all of these shows have casual sex throughout every season, but that doesn?t necessarily mean that teens are going out and doing exactly what they see on tv. By having teens watch these shows as they mature and grow up does not mean that they?re going to take after the shows. There are other shows like Hannah Montanna which is about a teen living two completely different lifestyles. You don?t see teens going all schitzophrenic. Teens are not all stupid, they have opinions and minds of their own to know what?s right and wrong. Most teens you speak with know the consequences of casual sex.
