Aschelminthes
Phylum of roundworms (nematodes) found in the class Nematoda.
Have round elongated bodies and coiled tails.
Females are usually larger than males.
Most are free-living.
Parasites have an intermediate and definitive host.
Apicomplexa
phylum consists of protozoans, and is in the class Sporozoa.
Complex life cycle consisting of sexual and asexual generations.
Ciliophora
Phylum consisting of protozoans which move by means of cilia.
Most are free living, Balantidium coli is the only known parasite.
Mastigophora
Subphylum of Sacromastigophora
a.k.a. flagellates due to method of movement
reproduce asexually
Most are free-living
Microspora
Phylum of tiny intracellular parasites
Mostly seen in immunocompromised.
Platyhelminthes
Phylum of flatworms
Hermaphroditic
Flat worms are found in the classes of Trematoda (flukes) and Cestoda (tapeworm).
Sarcodina
Subphylum of sacromastigophora
a.k.a. amebae
move by means of pseudopod projections
asexual
mostly free-living
Sacromastigophora
Phylum divided into the two subphylum Sacrodina and Mastigophora
asexual
Mostly free-living
chromatin
genetic material consisting of DNA
when found in the periphery of the nucleus is indicative of Entamoeba
Chromatoid body
rod-like structures of RNA w/ rounded or jagged ends
may be seen in the cysts of Entamoeba and flagellates
cilia
threadlike extentions, which are shorter and more numerous than flagella, and which arise from small basal granules.
commensal
parasites not known to cause disease in humans
parasite
a live organism living in, or on, and having some metabolic dependance on another organism known as the host.
cyst
the dormant stage of a protozoan, which is the infective stage for human and is significant in the transmission of disease.
definitive host
parasite reaches sexual maturity in this host and residues or reproduces.
intermediate host
immature or larval forms of parasites usually reside in these hosts, or where the parasite may undergo asexual reproduction.
endemic
the continual presense of a parasite in a particular area.
flagella
a whip like appendage used for movement.
hermaphroditic
a single organism possessing both male and female reproductive structures.
karyosome
a small mass of chromatin material found in the nuclei of certain protozoans.
miracidium
the ciliated larval stage of a fluke which develops w/in the ovum.
oncosphere
a six hooked larva contained w/in a cestode egg.
pseudopod
cytoplasmic projections used for movement.
trophozoite
the motile, actively multipling form of a protozoan, susceptible to destruction outside of the host, which usually lives in the large intestine causing tissue damage.
