Aesthetic Distance
Physical or psychological separation or detachment of audience from dramatic action, usually considered necessary for artistic illusion.
Flashbacks
abrupt movements from the present to the past and back again.

Realism
An attempt to present onstage people and events corresponding to those observable in everyday life.
Non-Realism
All forms of theatre that depart from realism, such as symbolism and fantasy.
Soliloquy
a solitary character speaks to the audience, expressing words in a hidden thought.
Pantomime
Performers pretend to be using objects that are not actually present.
Theatre of Fact
Reenactments of material gathered from actual events.
Repertory
Perform several plays on alternate nights, rather than presenting a single play night after night for the length of its run.
Performance Art
a single artist who presents material that is autobiographical, sometimes in an environment that is innovative or unusual.
Avante-garde
An intellectual, literary, or artistic movement in any age that breaks with tradition and appears to be ahead of its time, usually experimental and unorthodox.

Protagonist
Principal character in a play, the one whom the drama is about.
Antagonist
Opponent of the protagonist in a drama.
Plot
The arrangement of events or the selection and order of scenes in a play.
Obstacles
impediments put in a character´s way
Complications
Outside forces or new twists in the plot introduced at an opportune moment.
Crisis
A point in a play when events and opposing forces are at a crucial moment, and when the course of further action will be determined. Series of crises lead to Climax.
Climax
The high point in the develpment of a dramatic plot. The scene toward the end of a drama in which all the forces reach their highest pitch and the fate of all the characters in determined.

Ritual
Repetition or reenactment of a proceeding or transaction that has acquired special meaning.
Chorus
1. Ancient Greek, a group of performers who sang and danced, sometimes participating in the action but usually simply commenting on it.
2. Modern, performers in a musical play who sing and dance as a group.
Tableau
A static scene onstage featuring performers in costume.
Dramatic Structure
1. Climatic- Greek, low amount of characters, locations, scenes, tight construction.
2. Episodic- Shakespeare, extended, many locations, characters, events, subplots.
Tragedy
A serious action of universal significance and has important moral and philosophical implications.
Subtext
Emotions, tension, and thoughts not expressed directly in the text.
Heroic Drama
Serious drama, features noble or heroic characters caught in extreme situa
Romanticism
1800s movement, free writer from rultes, creativity, genius, mood and atmosphere more than content.
Bourgeois or Domestic Drama
Deals with problems of the middle and lower classes, particularly problems of the family and home.
Melodrama
Drama that emphasized action and spectacular effects and music. Happy ending- eventual triumph of good.
Comedy
A play light in tone, is concerned with issues tending not to be serious, has a happy ending, and provokes laughter.
Slapstick
All kinds of raucous, knockabout comedy.
Farce
Thrives on exaggeration, physical humor, stereotyped characters, not intellectual but entertaining and funny.
Burlesque
knockabout physical humor, exaggerations, vulgarity.
Satire
Uses wit, irony, and exaggeration to attack or expose evil and foolishness.
Domestic Comedy
dealing with family, situation comedies- sitcoms, family or friends in complicated but amusing situations.
Comedy of Manners
Pointing out foibles and peculiarities of the upper classes.
Comedy of Ideas
Comic techniques to debate intellectual propositions and to further moral and social points of views.
Tragicomedy
Tragic themes, noble characters, ends happy. Serious and comic.
Theatre of the Absurd
Nonsensical language, Non sequitur, existential characters, ridiculous situations. Futility of existence, inner sense of absurdity.

Recitatives
Sing talking technique used in Opera.
Musical Theatre
Any dramatic entertainment of which music and lyrics (sometimes dancing) form an integral and necessary part.
Opera
A work in which all parts are sung to musical accompaniment.
Operetta
Opera that is sung and spoken.
Musical Comedy
A form of musical entertainment which features a light, comic story interspersed with popular music.
Book
Traces the fortunes of the main characters through a series of adventures with a beginning, middle, and end.
Revue
A series of individual, independent songs and comic sketches.
Theater of Cruelty
Theatre based on magie ritual which would liberate deep, violent, and erotic impulses. Antonin Artaud wished to reaveal the cruelty beneath all human action.
Poor Theater
Theatre stipped to its barest essentials. Eliminate lavish sets, lights, costumes in order to achieve spiritual and aesthetic richness.
Happenings
Unstructured events that occured with minimum of planning and organization.
Multimedia
Combination of theatre with other arts, dance, film, and television.
Environmental Theatre
A branch of avant-garde theatre. no difference between audience space and acting space, flexible, multiple focuses rather than just one focus.
Postmodernism
The "modernist" interest in antirealism is no longer central to art- artists have moved beyond abstraction.
