Cells
Small, membrane-enclosed units filled with a concentrated queous solution of chemicals and endowed with the extraordinary ability to create copies of themselves by growing and diving in two.
DNA to RNA
Transcribed
RNA to Protein
Translated
Nucleotide
In every cell, the long DNA polymer chains are made from the same set of four monomers.
Evolution
The process by which living species become gradually modified and adapted to their envirnment in more and more sophisticated ways.
How are cells formed?
By the division of existing cells`
SEM
Scanning Electron Miscroscopy - 3D one
TEM
Transmission electron microscopy - the flat one
Cytoplasm
The filling of the cell - a transparent substance crammed with what seems at first to be a jumble of miscellaneous objects.
Organelles
Separate, recognizable substrates that are only hazily defined under the light microscope.
Pro-karyote
Before "kernal" - reffering to the absence of structured nucleus
Eukaryotes
Truly-kernal - referring to the prescence of a nucleus.
Shape of prokaryotes
rodlike, spherical, cork-screw
Under optimum conditions - how often can prokaryotes divide?
20 minutes - 11 hours = 8 billion
mitochondria
organelles that generate energy for the eukaryotic cell
Nucleus
the most prominent organelle in a eukaryotic cell - enclosed with 2 membranes that form the nuclear envelope.
Contains DNA
How do mitochondiran harness energy for the cell?
oxidation of food molecules, such as sugars, to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate
Chloroplasts
Large green organelles that are found only in the cells of plants and algae.
What two organelles contain their own DNA?
Mitochondria and Chloroplasts
How did Mitochondria and Chloroplasts come to be in the cells
Early eukaryotic cells may have engulfed the structures into themselvs.
Endoplasmic recticulum (ER)
An irregular maze of interconnected spaces inclosed by a membrane
Site where most cell membrane componants, as well as materials destined for export from the cell
Golgi apparatus
recieves and chemically modifies the molecules made the endoplasmic recticulum and then directs them to the exterior of the cell to various locations inside the cell.
Lysosomes
small irregularly shapped organelles in which intacellular digestion occurs, releasing nutrients from food particles and braking down unwanted molecules for recycling or excretion.
Peroxisomes
small membrane-enclosed vesicles that provide a contained enviornment for reactions in which hydrogen peroxide is generated and degraded.
Cytosol
The part of the cytoplasm that is not paritioned off within intracellular membranes. behaves like a water-based gel instead of a liquid solution.
Site of many chemical reactions that are fundamental to the cell's existence.
