what does the Solar system contain? what is its shape?
Sun
planets
their moons
rings
asteroids
comets
flat

flat
what is the shape of the orbits of the planets?
the shapes are all elliptical except Mercury is almost circular
Where is the astroiod belt located? what is it said to be made of?
It lies between Jupiter and Mars
Said to be failed planet formations
Said to be failed planet formations
Terrestrial planets and their characteristics
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Closest to the sun
smaller
rocky/metalic composition
highter average densities
spin slower
few moons
no rings

Jovian planets
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Farther from the sun
larger
smooth surfaces
lower densities
spin faster
many moons and rings
gaseous/ liquid envelopes are composed primarily of hydrogen and helium

What is the best Theory of how the solar system formed?
initial gas and dust nebula
dust grains grow by accreting gas, colliding and sticking
continued growth of clumps of matter, producing planetesimals
planetesimals collide and stick, enhanced by their gravity result is a few large planets
Rift
when the plate tectonics drift apart letting magnum come between and out of the trench
Subduction
when the rift is pushing the tectonic plate away to let the magnum out the other plate is going underneath another
Slip
is when the tectonic plates are rubbing together and placing pressure on each other eventually making them slide against each other.
What is the moons average density and what is the atmosphere of the Moon like?
the moons average density is smaller than the earth because the moon is smaller and its core is colder. The moon has n atmosphere because of the lack of suficent gravity and there is no wind of erosion.
Maria
they are dark and more featureless
this is the evidence of lunar volcanism
they are flat
this is the evidence of lunar volcanism
they are flat
highlands
Heavily cratered due to impacts
what is the evidence of volcanism?
maria
Rilles
Linear chain creaters
Rilles
Linear chain creaters
Rilles
are ditches carved out by flowing lava
Linear chains of craters
mark as pools of lava the the crust where lava emerged to form domes which then later collapsed from the lava being sucked back into the core
How did the Moon Form?
the moon formed from the same material as the earth as the same time and is said to be a stray object that Earths gravity captured when other planetesimals where still around. a mars sized object hit earth and out slung the smaller less dense moon we have today
Mercury
the smallest planet
One probe was ever sent there to do a fly-by
much like the moon and because it is so small it cooled off fast

Intercrater plains
may be ancient lava fields
Tidal force on Mercury
the sun has a tidal force on mercury making it have the same side towards the sun at all times and when nearest the sun has a very elliptical shape.
