White collar alienation

- an attitude of apathy/ fear/conformity amoung white collar workers

- there personalities become like commodities that can be bought and sold

- they all do the same leaser activities

- jobs are not about creativity and loyolty

jobs are done because they have2 be done not bc they want to do them

- consequences- arent critical of politics and are susceptible to fascism, authoritarianism and totalitarianism

Power elite

- element of agency but constrained by elements of society

- people of power have more agency then others

- triangle of power- Politics, Economy, Military

- control technoogy, family, education, religion

- they have simaller origins

- linked through informal networks (mingle outside of work)

- connected by revolving door (people from military go to politics and politics to buissness)

- backstage coordination (they do things behind the publics back)

Sociological Imagination

- power can be moved from bottom up

- understand yourself better when you understand your history and whats around you

- Its 2 main components are 1) personal troubles (threaten at a personal level) and 2) public issue (transend the individual and threaten at a public level)

- it leads you to reveal something that was hidden from society at large

� EX- ask yourself if its capitalism or socialism?

- called a field and not a system bc a) field implies dissorder while system implys structure and society is not always structured b)its a field bc its like a sports field and there is always competition

agency as well structure. it is a period that holds great potential and
promise but it also constrains and if people do not keep up with progress
and advances made in the modern age, people might feel at a loss.

� cultural context in which experiences develop

� Dominant groups ideologies inform African American women?s experiences

� Main stream ideologies oppress African American women but the latter can also develop cultures of resistance

- there are multipe components to a persons identity

- Butler questions the very notion of identity itself

- butler is against any form of labeling

Essentialism

-Judith butler (maybe Steven Seidman)

- fixed unchanged identities that corespond to people essential natures

- just like stereotyping

- Butler and all of QT is against this

- fixed identities are only good for politicle mobilization

Postcolonialism

- No theorist

- 1. all about resistence, reconstruction, multiple defonitions and multiple points of view

-2. anyone can do postcalanialism. its about people who want to get there own voices and agency (kind of like not being lable by an identity). usually there non wester people who wan to get out of westernization

-3. a lot of times people supresss bad memories. postcoloniasm is abt getting over silences in national history

-4. question popular narratives. come up with a counter narrative to help understand history and society. Make sense of the past. Its also about gaining/learning from the past.

-5. There is a symbiotic relationship between the colonized and the colonizer. The colonized want to be colonized and the colonizer likes colonizing. Because of this postcolonialism is also about psychological resistance (becoming aware and acknowledging a this symbiotic relationship and then eventually becoming reflexive and critical and coming up with counter narratives.

Habitus (real card)

- both agencey and structure (structure bc its from your social class and agencey bc its about how you interpret it)

- Tells you your taste and what you want (goals, choices and asperations)

- gives you a way to percieve/judge the outside world

- hard to brake out of

- past down from generation to generation

- makes virtue out of nicessity
