cartilage cells are called ____ and are found in pockets called ____
Chondrocytes
Lacunae
Chondrocytes are surrounded by an _________.
extra cellular matrix
Cartilage contains
no blood vessels or nerves
cartilage is surrounded by the _______. which
perchondrium.
resists outward expansion
contains blood vessels
is dense irregular connective tissue
Appositional growth
cells in the perchondrium secrete matrix against the eternal face of the exsisting cartilage
interstital growth
chondrocytes inside the cartilage divide and secrete new matrix, expanding the cartilage from within
growth plates
What are the 6 functions of bones?
support
Movement
protection
storage of minerals and growth factors
production of blood cells
fat storage
Compact bone
dense outer layer of bone and shafts of long bones
regular arangement of lamellae
Spongey bone
honeycomb of trabeculae filled with red bone marrow
periostrium is made up of
outer fibrous layer- dense connective tissue
inner osteogenic layer- made of osteoblasts and osteclasts
the periostriums osteogenic later is
richly supplied with nerve fibers, blood and lmyphatic vessels
Endosium
delicate membrane covering all internal surfaces of bone
has osteoblasts and osteoclasts
What are the organic complounds of bone?
Cells and osteoids
what and the 3 cells in bones?
Osteocytes-mature bone cells in bone tissue
Osteoblasts- bone forming
Osteoclasts-large cells that resorb or break down bone matrix
osteoid
unmineralized bone matrix composed of proteoglycans, glycoproteins, and collagen.
What are the inorganic components of bone?
Hydroxyapetites: Mineral Salts
65% bone mass
mainly calcium
prenatal bone development contains what two kinds of ossification?
Intramembranous Ossification
Endochondrial ossification
What is osteogenisis and ossification?
the process of bone tissue formation, which leads to:
1.formation of boney skeleton in embryos
2. bone growth into early adulthood
3. bone remodeling and repair
what is intramembranous ossification?
bone develops from a fibrous membrane formed by mesenchymal cells
it begins at week 8 of embryonic development
forms the cranial bones of skull and clavicles
What is the 1st step of intramembranous ossification?
1. ossification center appears in fibrous connective tissue membrane:
-mesenchymal cells cluster and form osteoblasts
what is the 2nd step of intramembranous ossification?
Bone matrix (osteoid) is secreted within the fibrous membrane
-osteoblasts secrete osteoid which is mineralized later
-trapped osteoblasts become osteocytes
What is the 3rd step of intramemranous ossification?
Woven bone and peristeum form
-osteoid is laid dwn between blood vessels forming a random network of trabeculae
-mesenchymal cells on surface form the periosteum
What is the 4th step of intramembranous ossification?
Bone collar of compact bone forms, and red marrow appears
-trabeculae deep into the periosteum thicken and later are replaced by compact bone.
-Spongey bone remains in the middle and its vessels become red marrow.
