Law passed in 1847, charged parents to ensure that the children knew both the principles of religion and the laws of Commonwealth
New England Primer
the first reading primer designed for American Colonies; became the most successful educational textbook and the foundation of most schooling before the 1790s
Dame Schools
an early form of a private elementary school; usually taught by women and were often located in the home of the teacher
The Common School
a public school; term coined by Horace Mann; refers to the face that they were meant to serve the individuals of all social classes and religion; first system of accessible, free, tax-supported elementary schools
One Room School
commonplace throughout rural portions of the country; all students of differing ages met in one classroom; only one teacher that taught academic basics to several grade levels of boys and girls
Hatch Act
This act encouraged certain colleges to set up experimental farms where faculty and students could conduct research into agricultural improvement
Normal schools
Early teacher preparation funded by counties and later states, offered 1-2 years study to prepare teachers for county and state licenser exams. The length of study depended on whether teachers taught in rural or cities, elementary or secondary.

De Facto segregation
Separate schooling of blacks and white children in Northern cities due to residential segregation. Blacks and whites lived in different neighborhoods, sometimes by choice, sometimes because blacks were kept from buying homes in certain areas.
De Jure segregation
Segregation of schools and other facilities mandated by law; for example, by the Jim Crow laws of the southern states.
Title IX
1964, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."
Acculturate
the exchange of cultural features that results when groups of individuals having different cultures come into continuous first hand contact; the original cultural pattens of either or both groups may be altered but the group remains distinct.
Assimilate
"Melting pot metaphor"; the process whereby a minority group gradually adapts to the customs and attitudes of the prevailing culture and customs.

political ideal that different groups can pursue different identities
