Ribosome
Part of the cell that produces proteins by linking amino acids together in long chains
Nucleus
A membrane-bound part of the cell that contains the genetic material and the "blueprint" for the cell's processes
Lysosome
A membrane-bound part of the cell that contains enzymes that can perform hydrolysis (digestion) of food, damaged cell parts, or the entire cell (apoptosis)
Cytoplasm
The jelly-like fluid that fills the cell and allows materials to move around
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
A system of membrane tunnels that extend from the membrane of the nucleus
Smooth ER
The part of the ER that lacks ribosomes and helps to create (synthesize) phospholipids for the cell
Rough ER
The part of the ER that contains ribosomes and helps to properly fold proteins and give them specific shape after they are made
Vacuole
A membrane "bag" within the cell that can be used to store nutrients, waste, or ions for later use or disposal
Golgi Body
A collection of membrane stacks within the cytoplasm that pick up proteins and attach molecular "tags" to help direct them to specific places inside or outside of the cell
Glycoprotein
A type of carbohydrate/protein that can be used as a tag for proteins or the cell membrane in order to give them an identity
Chromatin
The form of DNA that is normally found within the cell when it is stringy and not compacted
ATP
A molecule that is used as a form of energy within the cell, similar to a battery
Mitochondrion
A membrane-bound part of the cell that is able to take in glucose and oxygen gas, and transfer the energy to form ATP molecules
Centriole
A cell part that is used to form fibers for the cell so that materials such as DNA can be moved around the cell, typically during reproduction
Cell Wall
The outer covering around the cell membrane that provides extra protection and support for the cell, typically found in plants, fungi, and bacteria
Cellulose
A major part of the cell wall in plants
Chitin
A major part of the cell wall of fungi
Apoptosis
The destruction of the entire cell by rupturing the lysosome and releasing enzymes to digest the contents of the cell
Thylakoid
The thin, layered sac that is found within the chloroplast, containing chlorophyll pigments
Stroma
The liquid interior of the chloroplast, which contains many ATP molecules
Chloroplast
The membrane-bound part of the cell that contains green pigments, which can be used to trap and convert the energy of the sun
Grana
A stack of thylakoids within the chloroplast
Cell Membrane
The outer layer of the cell, which helps to regulate the materials that enter or leave the cell
Turgid
A cell that has become filled with water and slightly swelled
Plasmolyzed
A cell that has become dehydrated, lost water, and is shrunken
