electrical synapse
ionic current that flows directly between pre and post synaptic cells as mediator for signal transmission
chemical synapse
messenger released from presynaptic terminals on arrival of action potential. Diffuses to postsynaptic cell membrane where it binds with receptors often generates post synaptic potential
Where are cell bodies of motor neurons that synapse with skeletal muscles located?
in the CNS
What portion of the neuron contains that storage vesicles?
synaptic bouton
What do the storage vesicles contain?
neurotransmitters
What is the "active zone"?
presynaptic membrane region associated with each double row of vesicles. site where synaptic vesicles will eventually release Ach into synaptic cleft
What does the synaptic cleft contain?
ECF, basal lamina
What is the purpose of the junctional folds?
to increase surface area for Ach
Why is transmission only a one-way communication?
neurotransmitters are only located on the presynaptic side
What is the function of the neuromuscular junction?
to transmit a chemical messenger unidirectionally from a motor neuron to a skeletal muscle cell fiber
What does the arrival of action potential at a motor neuron trigger?
release of Ach
Where does the released Ach bind?
to acetylcholine receptor on postsynaptic muscle fiber membrane
What is created after Ach binds?
action potential
What does the action potential eventually lead to?
contraction of the fiber
describe the path of the action potential on a motor neuron
AP arises at initial axon segment and spreads slong entire neuron, eventually arriving at presynaptic terminal
What is responsible for generation of AP and its conduction to the terminal?
exchange of Na+ and K+ across axonal voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels
What does the wave of depolarization cause as AP arrives at the postsynaptic membrane?
opening of the voltage-gated Ca2+ channels
Why does Ca2+ enter the presynaptic terminal?
Ca2+ flows toward equilibrium across membrane
Where are the Ach-containing vesicles lined up in the presynaptic terminal?
in the active zones
What is the function of the binding proteins?
hold the vesicles in place
Describe the events involved in the release of Ach, starting with Ca2+ entry
1. Ca2+ flows into terminal
2. Ion binds with protein on synaptic vesicle membrane
3. Fusion of vesicle with presynaptic membrane
4. Opens vesicle
5. Release Ach into synaptic cleft
6. After transmitter relase, vesicle membrane is retrieved back into presynaptic terminal and recycled
What happens to the Na+ channels as Ach binds?
the channel opens and Na+ diffuses into the cell
What contribution does the diffusion of Na+ have on the cell?
depolarization
What happens to the Ach once it is done binding to the receptor?
it is destroyed by acetylcholinesterase
What are the products of Ach breakdown?
acetic acid and choline
