urinary system
recognized as the excretory system that gets rids of waste products produced in the body; skin excretes H2O and salts, lungs excrete CO2 and H2O, large intestine excretes undigested food residue as feces
genitourinary or urogenital
used to include both the urinary and reproductive organs
kidney
bean shaped organ that lies in the upper posterior abdomen, on either side of the vertebral column; 4.5 in. in vertical length
renal capsule
covering of fibrous connective tissue that encloses each kidney, with perinephritic fat surrounding this covering
hilum
a depression or indentation on its medial border where the structures composing the pedicle join the kidney
renal sinus
a vertical cleft or space at the hilum through which parts of the pedicle enter or leave the kidney
renal pedicle
includes the renal artery, renal vein, renal pelvis, lymphatics and nerves that join the kidney at the hilum
ureters
a right and a left, hollow tubes 10 to 12 in. in length that extend from a kidney to the urinary bladder
ureteral openings
two openings between the lower ends of the ureters and the urinary bladder
renal pelvis
upper expanded funnel-shaped end of each ureter
major calyces
two or three short tubes into which the renal pelvis divides
minor calyces
small cup shaped tubes into which each major calyx divides
urinary bladder
a sac, a reservoir for urine, and lies in the pelvis, protected by pelvic bones
urethra
the single passage from the bladder to the outside of the body through which urine is excreted
external urethral orifice
an opening at the outer end of the urethra
urethral sphincter
surrounds the urethra below the bladder
female urethra
1.5 in. in length, passes down and forward from the bladder neck to its opening on the perineum
male urethra
8 in. in length, passes through the prostate gland below the bladder, also through the membranes covering the perinium, and the entire length of the penis
