Sui
The name of this dynasty that first returned order and unity to China after the fall of the Han.
Yuan Jian
The founder of that dynasty who founded his capital at Chang’an and was first to patron Buddhism and Daoism by founding monasteries and appointing monks as officials.
Tang
The new dynasty founded by a general whose military prowess allowed him to take advantage of the fall of the Sui and claim the Mandate of Heaven
Li Shimin
Powerful emperor of the Tang Dynasty who continued the patronage of Buddhism and Daosim and claimed the title of Tang Taizon.
Xianjiang
The new region in the northwest that Tang Taizon claimed control over.
Empress Wu
Tang Taizon's successor. A former concubine who claimed the throne after his death despite her gender. She is responsible for giving meaning to the civil service examination system.
Chang'an
Tang Dynasty enjoyed a cultural renaissance and restored its capital city of Chang'an.
Song Taizon
Founder of the Song Dynasty who reestablished imperial control over the northwestern part of China after the fall of the Tang.
Kaifeng
The northern Song who had to establish a new capital further east called Kaifeng
Hangzhou
Because of increased pressure from the North by the Jurchen people, the Southern Song Dynasty had to move the capital further south in Hangzhou.
Mongols
Powerful nomadic tribe who betrayed their alliance with the Song and conquered the Song Empire
Genghis Khan
The tribal chief who united the Mongols into a mounted army with a compound bow. Conquered Central Asia, the Middle East and Russia.
khanates
At the conqueror's death his empire was divided into khanates.
Kubilai Khan
Grandson of the Khan who completed the conquest of the Great Khan of China. He retained the Confucian system of government under Mongol rule although he remained Buddhist.
Beijing
Kubilai Khan built a new capital city called Beijing and extended the Grand Canal.
Zhu Yuanzheng
Founder of the Ming Dynasty who overthrew the Mongols. He was a peasant, itinerant monk who amassed a peasant army.
Yongle
Mong's most important ruler who pacified the nomadic people who had troubled the Chinese for centuries, extended control over Korea and Vietnam and strengthened the Great Wall
Zenghe
Eunuch who led the Yongle's fleet of ships
scholar-gentry
Learned class of officials because of the government system of State Confucianism which required officials to pass difficult examinations
flying money
the name given to commercial credit after the banking industry was developed because of the rise in trade on the Silk Road
younger brothers
Tributary relations the Chinese established with smaller foreign kingdoms along the trade route.
Neo-Confucianism
revised philosophy that claimed men were the link between the material world and the spiritual one whose duty it was to transcend the material world by self cultivation.
Zu Xi
Founder of Neo-Confucianism. Taught that self-cultivation is achieved by men participating in the world by investigation of things and practicing Confucian moral principles
Li Bo
Daoist poet whose free spirited writing centered on nature and tended to exalt human passion as the only experience of life worth living.
Du Fu
Sober Confucian poet whose poems dealt with historical and ethical themes often reflecting concern for social injustice and the unfortunate.

Chinese belief that the spiritual truths can be found in nature is reflected in their art where men are portrayed as insignificant amidst nature.
