Insight Therapy
remove distress by leading people to understand their causes through deeply felt personal insights
Psychodynamic Therapy
Freud. Psychological problems - inner mental conflicts. Person make their conflicts conscious. Analyst make inferences about patient's experiences of unconscious conflicts. Patient experiences them consciously, must accept insight of therapist.
Person Centered Therapy
Carl Rogers theory. Focus on thoughts, abilities, and cleverness of client. Unconditional positive regard. Genuineness.
Behavioral Therapies
based on principles of learning that focus on observable measurable behavior.
Operant Conditioning Techniques
Time outs, token economies, and stimulus satiation
Classical Conditioning
Flooding, systematic desensitization, aversion therapy
Time Outs
removing individual from the reinforcing situation
Token Economies
using tokens that can be exchanged for other items or privileges.
Stimulis Satiation
give a person too much of a desired thing in order to reduce its attraction.
Flooding
immerse consenting person in the fear stimulus
Systematic Desensitization
teach relaxation, create hierarchy ranging from least to most feared stimulus.
Aversion Therapy
used for bad habits- ex. drinking, smoking, gambling
Cognitive Therapies
focus is on the client's thoughts rather than their behaviors or feelings.
Ellis' Rational-Emotive Therapy
negative emotions arise from people's irrational interpretations of experiences.
ABC Theory
Ellis' theory. A= activating event in the environment, B= belief is triggered in client's mind by event. C= emotional consequence of the belief.
Example of ABC Theory
A- person is fired from job
B- person believes he or she is worthless
C- person becomes intensely depressed
OR
A- person is fired from job
B- person thinks "my boss is a jerk"
C- person is not depressed
Musterbations
irrational belief that you must do or have something
Awfulizing
mental exaggeration of setbacks. focusing on negative things.
Biomedical Therapies
treatments that focus on the biological basis of a disorder
Resistance
a patient resists attempts to bring unconscious to conscious.
Transference
patient's unconscious feelings about a person in their life is experienced as feelings toward their therapist.
