The assination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand would have had a limited effect on WWI if it would not have been for the underlying causes from the war.
what were these underlying causes?
1) intense nationalism
2) abrasive colonial rivalriesand
3) a general struggle over the balance of power in Europe and the rest of the world.
What does it mean that WWI produced an ironic experience? It what ways did in manafest in interwar cultural developments?
stream-of-consciousness: lots of ideas of what WWI would be (glory, honor, pride) but in reality the end result would be death and distruction. Lost faith--couldn't believe people could do that kind of distruction
what is ultra-nationalism?
Ultra-nationalism is nationalism so extreme that it is harmful to international interests
How and why did ultra-nationalistic alternatives become popular between the World Wars?
in the Soviet Union everything became government property under communism. Farms could no longer be privatly owned and profits were shared.
in Italy their leader outlawed freedom of press and speach.
what caused these events?
the occurance of these events is caused by independence movements leading to civil wars--WWI lead to civil wars in individual countries, such as Russia where the communists were batteling anti-communists
How did WWI and the interwar period inspire people living under colonialism and newcolonialism to seek independence?
people of the time were inspired to seek independence due to the weak economies and government systems they were living in
what paths did people during WWI and the interwar period take to secure independence?
people tried to secure independence by rebuilding their economies, althought this was short lived due to the great depression
What was the experience of women, african americans, and asian americans in WWII America?
women--women were expected to take over the jobs previously held by men who were currently fighting in the war
african americans-- fought in the war along side white americans
asian americans--placed in "concentration camps" during the war because americans theought they would side with China during the war
How did the experience of women, african americans, and asian americans in WWII shape postwar social movements?
women--after the war they were expected to let the men take their jobs back. lead the the demand of women's rights
asian and african americans--demanded racial equality
How are post-WWII social movements, decolonization,a nd the Cold War related? Focus on self-determination, liberation, and power to previously powerless grpups.
1) non-aggressive--groups who had little power before such as african americans used this tactic to shape social movements
2) political arguments--individuals were determined to gain more independence; women wanted the same status they had suring the war
3)independence--same reasoning as non-aggressive
The post-Cold War can be described as the era of soft power. What is soft power and how can a given country gain or lose it?
soft-power is the ability to shape the preferences of others and get others to want the outcomes you want such as culture, interests, and building communities. it is created by creating things like the internet.
