What processes maintain stereotypes?
Illusory correlations
Social roles
Subtyping
Self-fulfilling prophecies
ABC's of prejudice and stereotyping
Affective component (prejudice) : negative feeling toward a group
Behavioral component(discrimination): negative or harmful action based on someone's group membership
Cognitive Component (stereotypes): Beliefs associated people with traits
Example of discrimination
If you are a police officer and you have the stereotypical belief that Af. americans are more violent than white, this might affect your behavior toward a specific black man you are trying to arrest.
What Causes Prejudice?
Social categorization: putting people in groups based on certain characteristics and others into another group based on their different characteristics
In group bias
Out group homogeneity
Failure of logic
How do we reduce prejudice?
Mutual interdependent- situation where 2 + more groups must depend on each other to accomplish a goal that is important to both groups
Mutual interdependence
Eagles and rattlers became friends when they had to cooperate in order to get something both groups needed
-Broken down truck need to be pushed up a steep hill
Examples of illusory correlation
There is a common belief that couples who haven't been able to have children will conceive a child after they adopt a child because they feel less anxious/stressed.
Self-fulfilling prophecy
Case whereby people:
1. have an expectation about what another person is like
2. which influences how they act toward that person
3. which causes that person to behave in a way consistent with people's original expectations
Realistic Conflict Theory
Idea that limited resources lead to conflict between groups and result in increased prejudice and discrimination
-prejudice attitudes tend to increase when times are tense and conflict exists over mutually exclusive goals
-ex. prejudice between northerners and southerners
6 conditions of contact
mutual interdependence
common goal
equal status
informal, interpersonal contact
multiple contacts
social norms of equality
Why do we people help?
Evolutionary explanation: Kin selection
Social exchange theory
Empathy- altruism hypothesis
Kin Selection Study
Imagine your 21 yr old cousin and 75 yr old neighbor and 25 yr old sibling are each in a different room in a burning house and you can only save one.
-more likely ot save relatives than non-relatives and siblings over cousin.
-age plays a role
Gender differences in prosaically behavior
western cultures- males roles: chivalrous and geroic, females are expected ot be nurturing and caring
-91% people risked their life for a stranger were MALE
-women are more likely to provide social support to their friends and ot engage in volunteer work
Diffusion of responsibility
phenomenon whereby each bystander's sense of responsibility to help decrease as the number of witnesses increases
why? because other people are present, no single bystander feels personal responsibility to act.
Diffusion of responsibility
religious people help more only if it puts them in a good light to themselves or others
-people in interdependent cultures compared to westerners are more likely to help in-group members, but less likely to help out-group members
Good mood and helping
When we feel good, we do good because were more likely to see others are worth our help
Good mood and helping example
people in a mall used a pay phone
-found a dime in the coin return
-helper walks by and drops some paper
84% helped
City v. Rural dwellers
people are more likely to help in rural v. urban areas
-because of urban overload
What is aggression
behavior
directed toward a living organism
intentional
victim motivated to avoid harm
Origin of aggression
nature v. nurture debate
Evolutionary explanation
being aggressive means a higher place in the dominance hierarchy
Biological mechanisms
Amygdala- associated w/ emotions
Testosterone; pos. correlated w/ aggression
Socialization and gender differences
rewards/punishments
relations v. physical aggression
Relationships and health
social relationships are important contributors to health
-married people have better mental and physical health
-results not true for troubled marriages
is there a link between social support and health?
yes
less depression, healthier, etc.
Empathy
The ability to put oneself in the shoes of another person and to experience events and emotions the way that person experiences them
ex. if a person is in need of help
Pluralistic Ignorance Example
When an emergency occurs, bystanders often assume that nothing is wrong because no one else looks concerned- even though everyone is worried and concerned
