1901 AMA Formed

Organized at ameeting in Philadelphia, which 250 delegates attended. It was the firstnational medical convention in the US. Today it represents one-third of thenation's doctor's, and it has its own journal.

Anthracite Coal Strike (1902)

United Mine Workers strike for union recognition, shorter hours, higher wages. Very nasty between miners and mine owners. Roosevelt steps in to mediate and ends the strike, earning him a reputation as a friend of labor.

Hay-Pauncefort Treaty - 1901

signed by the United States and the United Kingdom on 18 November 1901, as a preliminary to the creation of the Panama Canal. The Treaty nullified the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850 and gave the United States the right to create and control a canal across the Central American Isthmus to connect the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.
