polyuria

excessive passage of urine resulting in profuse urination and urinary frequency

oliguria

less urination than normal

anuria

nonpassage of urine, < 50 mL a day

the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit time

nocturia

waking up during the night to urinate

urgency

a sudden, compelling urge to urinate

dysuria

feeling pain, burning, or discomfort during urination

texas catheter

a condom cath- an external urinary collection device that fits over the penis like a condom, used in management of urinary incontinence

foley catheter

a rubber catheter with a ballon tip that is filled with a sterile liquid after it has been placed in the bladder

residual urine

urine that remains in the bladder after urination

suprapubic catheter

a urinary catheter inserted through the skin 1in above the symphysis pubis, sutured to the abdominal skin

kelly drip or CBI

continuous bladder irrigation- a continuous infusion of a sterile solution into the bladder, usually by using a 3 way irrigation

catheterization

the introduction of a hollow flexible tube into a body cavity or organ to inject or remove a fluid

micturation (urination)

the act of passing urine

measuring output, cleaning tubing and peri area, checking for kinkied tubing, bag hung below the bladder

a surgical procedure in which all or part of the urinary bladder is removed

enterostomy

a surgical procedure that produces and artificial anus or fistula in the intestine through an incision in the abdominal wall

lleal conduit

a method of urinary diverson using intestinal tissue

maceration

the softening and breaking down of skin resulting from prolonged exposure to moisture

ostomy

a surgical procedure in which an incision or stoma is surgically created in the wall of the abdomen to allow passage of urine from the bladder or the intestinal contents from the bowel

peristalsis

the coordianated, rhythmic senal contraction of smooth muscle that forces food throught the digestive tract

peristomal

pertaining to the area of skin surrounding a stoma in the abdominal wall

peritonitis

an inflammation of the peritoneum (membrane that lines the entire abdominal wall)

skin barrier

an artificial layer of skin, usually made by plastic, applied to a skin before the application of tape or ostomy drainage bag

stoma

a pore, orificem or opening on a surface

ureterostomy

the surgical creation of a new opening through which a ureter empties onto the surface of the body or into another outlet such as rectum

urinary diversion

surgical creation of an alternate route of flow for urine to replace an absent or diseased portion of the lower urinary tract to preserve renal function

incontinence

to retain- the inability to control urination or defecation

carminative

to cleanse- pertaining to a substance that relieves flatulence and abdominal distension

cathartic

cleansing-pertaing to a substance that cause evacuation of the bowel

cleansing enema

an anema usually composed of soap suds asministered to remove all formed fecal material from the colon

colon

the portion of the large intestine extending from the cecum to the rectum

constipation

difficulty in passing stools or incomplete or in frequent passage of hard stool

defacation

to void feces from the bowels

enema

a solution introduced into the rectum to promote evacution of feces

flatus

air or gas in the intestin that is passed through the rectum

flatuence

a blowing- the presence of an excessive amount of air or gas in the stomach et intestinal tract

hemorrhoids

a varicousity in the lower rectum or anus caused by congestion in the veins of the hemorrhoidal plexus

impaction

pressing together- the presence of a large or hard fecal mass in the rectum or colon

a medication administered via an enema

hidden or difficult to observe directly

oil-rentention enema

an enema containing about 200-250mL of an oil based solution given to soften a fecel mass

rectal tube

a long slender tube which is inserted into the rectum in order to relieve flautlent, which has been chronic and not been alleviated by other methods

a test using quaiac as a reagent, formerly performed on feces et urine for detecting occult blood in the intestinal et urinary tract

a type of enema aimed to evacuate flatus from a patient who has undergone surgery

laxative

to loosen- pertaining to a substance that causes evacuation of the bowel by a mild action

melena

black- abnormal black tarry stools that has a distinctive odor et contains digested blood

peristalsis

contraction- the coordinated, rhythmic serial contraction of smooth muscle that forced food through the digestive tract

ostomy

a surgical procedure in which an incision or stoma is surgically created in the wall of the abdomen to allow passage

proctoscopy

the examination of the rectum with an endoscope inserted through the anus

proctosigmoidoscopy

the use of a sigmoidoscope to examine the internal lumen of the rectum and pelvic colon

colonscopy

the examination of the muscosal lining of the colon by using a colonoscope, an elongated endoscope

barium swallow

the oral administration of a radiopaque barium sulfate suspension given to radiographically demonstrate possible defects in the esophagus

barium enema

a rectl infusion of barium sulfate

suppository

an easily melted medicated mass for insertion into the rectum, uretha, or vagina

siphoning

a process of drawing off fluid from a cavity with a tube using atmospheric pressure
