What is stereotyping and why is it harmful?
Stereotyping is a short-hand way to describe a person with collective, rather than unique characteristics. Stereotyping is harmful because it can lead to scapegoating, discrimination, segregation, physical abuse, to state-sponsored genocide.
How do dominant cultural groups stereotype and why?
Culturism- belief that one cultural group, whether based on ethnicity, economics, education, etc is somehow better or worse than some other cultural group.
What is the purpose behind image analysis?
To fully appreciate visual communication, you must be able to use some sort of critical method to analyze pictures.
An image, regardless of its medium of presentation is forgotten if it isn't analyzed.
What is the personal perspective
A gut reaction to the work based on subjective opinions.
What is Historical perspective?
A determination of the importance of the work based on the medium's time line.
What is Technical perspective?
The relationship between light, the recording medium used to produce the work, and the presentation of the work.
What is Ethical perspective?
The moral and ethical responsibilities that the producer, the subject, and the viewer of the work have.
What is Cultural perspective?
An analysis of the symbols used in the work that conveys meaning within a particular society at a particular time.
What is Critical perspective?
The issues that transcend a particular image and shape a reasoned personal reaction.
What is a title sequence and its significance?
Presentation of titles, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound.
Simple title- top and tail silent films.
Opening titles- tell more than who edited a film or designed its production
Great opening titles- pure cinema, translating movie's ideas into pure poetic imagery.
Who is Saul Bass?
More than 5 decades Bass was a design innovator. Instrumental in the development of the corporate identity campaign.
Bass launched his film career after designing the graphics for "The Man with the Golden Arm."

How did Bass transform the motion picture industry?
Controversial when the first appeared, Bass' graphics define the potent, hip, and harsh aesthetic of the 50s & 60s.

Refers to differences in color, size, symbolism, time & sound. Proportion, or scale, refers to the spatial relationship between design elements & the size of the page or frame.

Sound refers to all the audio aspects involved with a presentation
Balance
Placements of elements within a frame.
Considered balanced if it equalizes the weight between the x (horizontal) and y (vertical) axes.
Rhythm
Controls movement of the viewer's eye from one element to another.
Simplicity is part of the rhythm of a design.
Unity
Elements within a design should all be similar in content, with elements fitting the same mood.
