Given that this is a survey to biblical literature one of the main things we want to introduce and learn this term is how to engage the different genres that we see in scripture. A literary genre is just a type, category, or classification of literature. Just like music has genres…country, jazz, gospel, blues, classical and so on….so does literature. These genres can be identified by looking at say the characteristics of a given work, i.e. the form, structure, content, design, and other factors…again similar to music. The genres that we will study this term include, in the basic order that we will cover them in class, the OT Testament narratives, law, wisdom, the psalms, prophecy, the gospels, parables, The NT narrative of Acts, the epistles, and apocalyptic literature. You will notice each of these genres appear as a subject matter in the given chapters, and in some cases two chapter, in How to Read the Bible for All its Worth.Per our Fee and Stuart text we will engage each of the mentioned genres, look at their various characteristics, uncover common problems readers often face while studying within a certain genre, and get a sense of how to properly understand each of these by learning the rules by which we should approach them. Throughout Fee and Stuart they will share common mistakes and pitfalls to avoid. Understanding how to approach each genre is an important part of Hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is simply a fancy word for the art and science (or as some would say the theory and practice) of interpretation. Some of the most basic types of literary genre are found in scripture and are pretty easy to identify… Through the chapters in Fee and Stuart we will deal with the various genres in detail…Note that after we get through Chapters 1 and 2 of Fee and Stuart we will be jumping around a bit. That is because as we read about the OT Narratives in Fee and Stuart we will be reading about the related narrative books in the Harbin text. As we read about the Law in Fee we will be looking at Deuteronomy and Leviticus in Harbin. These are of course books of the law. We will mirror this practice throughout the course. As we read about the genre in Fee and Stuart we will be looking at the parallel material in Harbin. Recall you will need to clarify the genre of each book of scripture in your Summary of the Books of the Bible Projects. In additions you will interact with the Fee and Stuart chapters on OT Narratives, Prophecy, and the Epistles via your class discussion board projects. For more details on those assignments see the related documents and instructions in the Syllabus and Assignment Instructions area of the course under Course Content. Thank you and I hope this was helpful.
