Articulation
distal end of radius + articular disc of distal radio-ulnar joint articulate with proximal row of carpal bones (except pisiform)
- ulna not involved
- pisiform acts as sesasmoid bone: increases leverage of flexor carpi ulnaris
Joint Capsule
- fibrous layer attached to distal ends of radius and ulna, and proximal row of carpals:
- scaphoid
- lunate
- triquetrum
- synovial membrane lines internal surface; attached to margins of the articular surfaces
Ligaments
- palmar radiocarpal ligaments
- dorsal radiocarpal ligaments
- ulnar collateral ligament
- radial collateral ligament
Movements
- flexion - extension
- abduction - adduction
- circumduction
Movements - flexion
- FCR (flexor carpi radialis)
- FCU (flexor carpi ulnaris)
- assisted by palmaris longus and abductor pollicis longus (flexors of fingers and thumb)
Movements - extension
- extensor carpi radialis longus
- extensor carpi radialis brevis
- extensor carpi ulnaris
- assisted by extensors of fingers and thumb
Movements - abduction
- abductor pollicis longus
- flexor carpi radialis
- extensor carpi radialis longus

- limited to ~15º by radial styloid process

simultaneous contraction of:
- extensor carpi ulnaris
