massive fortification that included machine guns, tank obstacles, and artillery built by the French between Germany and France to protect against future invasion and give France time to organize their army.
When: 1930s, post WWI
Where: along the borders between France and Germany
Significance: This was a major French investment in defense but it was not successful in stopping the invasion by Germany lead by Hitler in 1940 during World War II. Hitler simply lead his armies around the wall through Belgium and the Netherlands and attacks France from behind. France is defeated by the Nazis and becomes under German rule. France concentrated so much of its military power on the line that it could not put up a fight when Hitler attacked. Also gave France a false sense of security once WWII started, which could have also contributed to their easy defeat.
