Private virtues. Citizenship begins at home.: Wollstonecraft thinks public and private are continuous. She wants to put our minds and locate education between the grey area btw public and private. Morality begins in the home, the household/family life is where a lot of people spend a lot of time. Especially women are spending a lot of time at home due to restricted job opportunities. She claims private virtue is equivalent to public virtue. They’re the same in women and men.
Private virtue = Public Virtue
The household is like the state.: Any virtues should be the same in public and in private. She wants consistency across public and private divide. A lot of market oriented thinkers argue that private vices = public virtue. This leads to inconsistency because everyone acts selfishly.
Private roles are:
Continuous with public roles. Equality makes for better citizenship.
What is one role of virtue sexed by nature?
Republic motherhood. The biggest role for a woman was to become a good mother so she could raise the next generation of citizens and shape their characters well. If the mother isn’t educated properly then how can she educate others properly. You take a private role (motherhood) and give it a public purpose. This is the one exception for Wollstonecraft where nature makes a difference for gender roles.
Wollstonecraft thinks that education primarily aims at
Good citizenship; job training comes second.: the best way to raise good citizens is to educate women, because they make better mothers. Also interested in formal education, book learning.
Wollstonecraft thinks current educational Practices
e.g. boarding schools or home schooling, do not develop the child’s character.: They fall short of the standard and do not promote good citizenship. She believes boarding schools are hotbeds of inequality and corruption. Home schools are too close to the home. It doesn’t allow kids to interact with other kids. They’re not able to learn independence to become good citizens.
