= passion between individuals. One self is struck in the flesh by another’s suffering.:means “suffering with”. According to Arendt a compassionate person is someone is sees someone suffering, they also feel it in their body because of two things, identification and revulsion (experience and understanding that it could happen to you)
= sentiment between groups. The “higher” abstractly connects with the “lower” class.: Pity is between groups and happens when there are social inequalities. Pity is a degraded form of compassion. It’s when you try to take compassion to the social level. Compassion turns into pity when you try to bring it into politics and neither are appropriate for politics.
= principle between citizens. An individual citizen acts according to an abstract idea. : A feeling of being together and being with other people and knowing their your fate is tied to another’s. Solidarity is based on principles and ideals. With pity there is abstract emotion. With Solidarity it is abstract in a good way.
The sentiment of pity led French revolutionaries to feelings of enmity.:
Compassion → pity will avoid tiresome processes of persuasion: Compassion cannot enter the public realm and apply to the collectivities of thousands of people. Pity assumes the privilege of the high and the low.
Les enragés idealizes les sans-culottes. Boundless pity → boundless rage; virtue → vengeance. If you start with the idea that people are virtuous then you end up seeking vengeance for the people.
