Assignment: Do the Reading In order to stimulate continuing attention to the assigned reading in Shop Talk and War Stories and to make further specific and direct use of the material in the book, I?m assigning the following task: For weeks 1 through 5, identify and provide a brief annotation* on at least two Significant Points About Reporting, or SPARs, that you found in reading at least two of the selections assigned for that week (four SPARs in all per week, in other words). The SPARS may be turned in at any time during the week but not later than Monday of the following week (or Tuesday, in week 2). Week 1 Ch. 1, Beginnings, 1-20; Ch. 2, Reporting, 21-42 Week 2 Ch. 4, Writing, 67-103 Week 3 Ch. 5, Beat Reporting, 104-130; Ch. 3, Interviewing, 43-66 Week 4 Ch. 9, Internet & CAR, 192-216; 6, Investigative Reporting, 131-151 Week 5 Ch. 7, Off Straight & Narrow, 152-177 *By ?annotation? I mean a few sentences (about 50 words) that elaborate or explain or comment on the point you have found. For example (a hypothetical one): SPAR: Reporters ought to be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Jason Scoopgetter says his experience has taught him that the street reporter can never tell how long he will have to pound the pavement in pursuit of a story, so wearing comfortable shoes is a minimum necessity. You never know how long it will take to get the story, so at least try to be comfortable. Single-spacing is acceptable. The completed assignments may be e-mailed or turned in as hard copy.
