Real Numbers

All numbers you can write with decimals.

Absolute Value

Everything in bars is positive.

Factors

The product of two smaller numbers. ex. 60= 4 x 15 or 3 x 20 therefore 4, 15, 3, and 20 are factors of 60.

Prime Factors

Factors that can be broken down into smaller factors. (factor trees, etc.) 60= 12 x 15. So 60 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 5

Fractions

Numerator over denominator.

Cross Multiplication

8/8 x 3/11 = (8 x 3) over (8 x 11) or 24/88

Reducing Fractions

44/112, both numbers are divisible by four. So it also equals 11/28.

Adding Fractions

1/3 + 1/5 put them over 15. So, (3 x 5) = 15 and (5 x 3) = 15. Then 5/15 + 3/15 = 8/15.

Cross Multiply with Variables

2/3x = 5/7y = 14x= 15y

Percents

Taking less than 100% of something makes it smaller; taking more than 100% of something makes it bigger.

Exponents

7 to the fourth is a shortcut for 7x7x7x7

Multiplying exponents

8 ^ 2 x 8 ^ 4 = 8 (2+4) so 8 ^ 6

or (8x8) x (8x8x8x8)

Ex. (8^3)^2 = 8(3x2) or 8^6

Raising by 1/2

Is the same as the square root of that number.

Negative exponent

10 ^ -3 is the same as 1/ 10^3
