What evidence is there of possible alien habitats on Europa?
What is a hydro-thermal vent. Where exactly is it found?
A hydro-thermal vent occurs when seawater gets into the Earth's crust. The seawater sinks down into subcrustal magmatic chambers. In these chambers, the sea water is separated due to the high temperatures, which causes it to become mixed with other chemicals. This heated water vapor rises and shoots out, forming the hydrothermal vents.
What are end-member fluids? Describe the three kinds.
End-member fluids are the fluids formed by hydro-thermal vents. There are 3 kinds. Heated Seawater reacts with hot rock. Vapor from phase separation is rich in volatile and primordial gases. Brine from phase separation is rich in metals/salts e.g. Li,K,Rb, Ce.
What is chemosynthesis?
Chemosynthesis is the deep-sea analog for photosynthesis, in which Formaldehyde (CH2O) and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2SO4) are formed, as well as methane (CH4) and Water (H2O).
What is Europa?
A moon of Jupiter, theorized as the most likely solar system object to harbor life.
What are the defining features of Europa?
Europa has the youngest icy surface of the Jupiter system.
Europa has no seasons, as the axis of rotation is perpendicular to its plane of orbit.
Europa is mostly water ice and many salts have been detected.
