Jacob gives his 2 reasons for teaching from Isaiah
Jacob tells of Jewish history: they are captured from Babylon and then are freed
tells of the ministry and crucifixion of Christ
the help the Gentiles will give unto the Jew in gathering them
the latter-day restoration of the Jews - once they believe in Christ
Reason for teaching: 1. To glorify God, 2. Nephi said to.
the Jews have divorced the Lord
Isaiah speaks concerning the Messiah
Israel has divorced the Lord
The Lord will aid those who are obedient
We sell ourselves into slavery through sin. We can be redeemed.
Importance of Covenants
the Lord shall comfort Zion in the last days and gather Israel
“awake, awake...put on thy beautiful garments” - garments = covenants
this is the only way we can be redeemed
O’s and Wo’s, bring us closer or further from the Lord + his covenants
Jacob has read Isaiah so that they might have knowledge of the covenants
covenants are kept by the true church and they are essential to salvation
awful monster of sin and death
SMILE: Spiritually Minded Is Life Eternal
Importance of Covenants
only through Christ can you be saved
the Jews will crucify Christ, they are scattered until they believe in him, America shall be a land of liberty
The Law of 3 Witnesses
Reasons to Quote Isaiah: 1. HOPE--delight in proving the coming of Christ, 2. Covenants of the Lord
Isaiah speaks in ‘dualism’: our day + his day; Babylon + Second coming
Isaiah’s main themes:
Scattering and Gathering of Israel
Messiah and His atonement
Problems of the Jews
Problems of the Lamanites
Nephi’s children, wars, coming of the christ, destruction, christ appears to the nephites, 200 years of peace. Problem: sell themselves for naught, pride/foolishness, choose darkness rather than light. Solution: the Book of Mormon.
Problems of the Gentiles
Problem: Pride, secret combinations (murder for money and power), priestcraft (opposite of priesthood), all manner of abominations. Solution: Book of Mormon.
Bringing to knowledge what God has done for our fathers
Know the covenants between God and man
Be a witness that Jesus is the Christ
Order is important because if you understand the first two, then the third one is already believed
Families and Covenants bring us to Christ.
pattern of a prophet found in the first chapter of 1 Nephi, and importance of the Holy Spirit in obtaining the Brass plates
have life threatened/ be killed
tree of life=christ
iron rod=word of God
mists of darkness=temptations of the devil
river of filthy water=depths of hell
great and spacious building=pride of the world (we live in the great and spacious building)
The four groups:
1- never caught hold of the rod and were lost
2- partook of the fruit, but were ashamed and made their way to the great and spacious building (clinging group)
3- Held steadfast to the rod, never falling away, and falling on their knees at the tree to partake of the fruit.
God condescended to become the literal Father of Christ
Christ condescended to be with us
Means to willingly lower from one point to another
Great and Abominable Church is in 1 Nephi 13 and 1 Nephi 14. Understand that chapter 13 is literal and chapter 14 is figurative
In chapter 13, the great and abominable church is a literal church among many which removes many plain and precious truths from the Bible
Apostasy and Restoration
Catholic church who removed precious parts from the Bible
The Lord solves this by bringing forth the book of mormon, pearl of great price, JST and D&C
in chapter 14, there are figuratively only two churches-the church of God and the GAC or church of the devil
GAC = Great and Abominable Church
Anyone who is not part of the Church of Christ = GAC
the GAC is made up of those who fight against Zion
“these” plates, “other” plates (1 Nephi 19), and “them” (1 Nephi 20) and “us” (1 Nephi 21)
“These” plates = Smaller plates, spiritual account
“Other” plates = Larger plates, historical account
“Them” = Jews
story line and main characters as Lehi and his family left Jerusalem and travel through the wilderness; review the principles that help Lehi’s family to press forward to the promised land
1 Ne 16 - nephi’s bow broke, murmurings, nephi just makes a new bow
What’s Important Now? Worry about the present and look forward to the future
2 Ne 1 - IF we keep the commandments, the lord will keep his promises to us
doctrine of the scattering and gathering of Israel (1 Nephi 19:13-16)
the Lord scatters Israel because they rejected Christ and turned their hearts away from Him
Once they no longer turn away their hearts they will know of Christ and He will remember them and gather the Jews
2 Ne 1: “patriarchal blessing of America”: God will establish a great nation, which will be a land of liberty and it will prosper as a nation as long as its people keep his commandments
groups of people sent to America by God
b. the Lord will bring forth a choice seer (Joseph Smith)
he will (1) bring forth knowledge of the covenants to God; (2) be great like unto Moses; (3) have the power to bring forth the Lord’s word (4) bring salvation unto the Lord’s people
he has done more for the salvation of man than any other person save Christ
America had to be established before the Lord could restore his gospel (1776 had to be before 1830)
(whenever a fallen state is mentioned in the book of mormon, the following verses explain the mercy of the atonement, and its ability to raise us up from our carnal state)
2 Ne 2: Lehi explains the Fall to Jacob
because of the Fall there is death, joy, good, misery, sin, children (Christ makes all the negatives okay)
2 Ne 9: grace is Christ’s enabling power; the o’s and wo’s which either draw you closer to Christ or pull you away from him
Covenants are like a contract with the ordinance being like the signature.
covenants are essential to exalt and redeem mankind
you have to choose to be spiritually minded and forsake your sins to defeat the Awful Monster which is sin and death
SMILE: to be Spiritually Minded is Life Eternal
4 steps to overcoming the weakness of the flesh
count your blessings- the lord has helped you before and He will be there for you again
reason with yourself - why should I sin when the Lord has done so much for me?
command yourself - I will forsake sin and trust in Christ
storyline of 2 Nephi 5 and how one remains happy during tough times.
Nephi flees into the wilderness with those who will follow the Lord; they become the Nephites and those who seek to take Nephi’s life become the Lamanites; the Nephites prosper in the land and keep the Lord’s commandments; they build a temple; the Lamanites are cursed and are a idle people
Try to understand prophesying among the Jews.
they use metaphors and hide everything within historical accounts
TYPE=person/place/object that bears witness that is greater than itself
ex: the destruction of Babylon is like the destruction of the 2nd coming
Make the most of the prophets’ teachings. - they are seers!
Live in the last days when everything is being fulfilled.
material presented in class concerning Isaiah.
Isaiah was a prophet, seer and revelator
a seer is one who sees past, present, and future
when Isaiah says “those days” he is talking about our days (the last days)
he was born in 770 BC, his 1st vision was around 740 BC, and in 722 Israel is taken into bondage
the history of Jerusalem is important to the Nephites and Lamanites
why does Nephi quote Isaiah?: to prove that Nephi’s words are true and so that the people can liken the teachings unto themselves
the Lord shows his words are true through 3 witnesses (this is called the law of witness) and the 3 who testify of Christ are Nephi, Isaiah, and Jacob
also the top 2 reasons Nephi quotes Isaiah are:
#1: he loves to prove the coming of Christ-which provides hope
#2: to bring forth knowledge of the covenants of the Lord
Isaiah talks mainly about 3 themes/time periods
#1: Scattering and Gathering of Israel -that’s now
#2: coming of Christ and his Atonement
BOM is written to the Lamanites, Jews and Gentiles
Doctrines of the devil:
1- He stirs us up to anger against that which is good
2- He pacifies us (makes us content in our state)
3- He flatters us
The Natural Man is an enemy to God
Foolish doctrines of men:
Denying the Holy Ghost
Denying the power of God
Denying the miracles of the Lord
Explain why Jacob quoted Isaiah.
#1: to Glorify God (verses 4-5)
#2: because Nephi told him to! -listen to the prophet
understand the analogy of the covenant and the “bill of divorcement”.
understand the relationship between the creation of the earth, the fall of Adam and Eve, and the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
This is taught in 2 Nephi 9: 6-7:
the creation had to happen so that we might receive bodies and be like God, the fall came through transgression cutting us off from God but giving us agency, this resulted in sin and physical death which required an infinite atonement and the power of resurrection; all the weaknesses which result from the Fall can be overcome through Christ’s Atonement
sin separates us from God; to be carnally minded is death
in order to come unto Christ we must be spiritually minded (SMILE=spiritually minded is life eternal)
in addition we must turn away from our sins, forsaking them, and come unto Christ (verse 45)
This could be related to the “parable of the kidnapper” in which the Awful Monster (sin and death) seeks to separate us (the child) from our parent (Heavenly Father)
in order for Christ to ransom us through Christ’s grace/enabling power/atonement we must actively strive to keep God’s commandments and abide to the O’s taught in this chapter
vs 23-25: we are always free to change
Explain the keys to understanding Isaiah.
2- Use those filled with a spirit of prophecy (Prophets, seers and revelators)3- Live in the Last days when the prophecies will be fulfilled.
reasons why Nephi recorded the prophecies of Isaiah.
1- His soul delights in proving the coming of Christ; Christ=hope
2- To help us understand and know the covenants of the Lord
Explain the Book of Mormon’s message to the Jews, the Lamanites, and the Gentiles, and to us personally.
Chapter 25: problems of the Jews
Chapter 26: problems for the Lamanites
Chapter 27: problems of the Gentiles
verses 1-3: solution for the Gentiles
4-6: solutions for the Lamanites
7: solutions for the Jews
this structure is called a chiasmus because the solutions are given in the opposite order of that chapters addressing the different groups
Interpret the prophecies that foretold the coming forth of the Book of Mormon in 2 Ne 27.
“enemies of Christ” exposed in 2 Ne 28.
Many false churches will be built up in the last days—They will teach false, vain, and foolish doctrines—Apostasy will abound because of false teachers—The devil will rage in the hearts of men—He will teach all manner of false doctrines
